The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Social Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Migration and Global Mobility Studies.
Position
- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of Migration and Global Mobility Studies, more specifically in a project called “Outsourcing family visa processes: the role of non-state actors in migration border management”.
The PhD project investigates how European states outsource their visa services and what consequences this has for refugee families trying to reunite in Europe. In the last 20 years, states have increasingly outsourced the processing of visas to private agents, operating in countries of origin and transit, variably endowed to collect, process and filter applications. However, little is known about how outsourcing policies have affected migrant populations living in contexts of crisis. The PhD candidate will explore outsourcing policies, their implementation and the challenges that transnational families face. The researcher will conduct comparative policy analysis between two or more European countries and ethnographic research in visa centres, consular offices and refugee settings in extra-European transit countries.
- You will build an expertise in studies related to externalisation of borders, migration management and the state, transnationalism, migrant and refugee families, qualitative research methods.
- You will present in international conferences and publish scientific articles related to the research project.
- You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Network of Migration and Global Mobility.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Sciences, Development studies or related disciplines, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You have a strong interest in the field of migration and refugee studies (prior academic or professional experience in the field of migration and refugee studies is not necessary, but highly appreciated)
- You have a strong interest and commitment to ethnographic research
- You are willing to conduct fieldwork in extra-European countries
- You are fluent in English and willing to learn other languages (prior knowledge of German, Dutch, Italian, Amharic, Tigrinya, Urdu, Pashto, Dari or other non-European languages is highly appreciated)
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years (total term of appointment of max. 4 years)
- We offer the opportunity to work in a lively and interdisciplinary research environment where you will collaborate with experts on the topic of migration and global mobility, with international stakeholders and local partners working in the field.
- We offer financial support for participating in academic conferences, fieldwork and research visits.
- The planned start date is 1st September 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- You will do most of your work at Stadscampus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
