We are looking for a Head of Translational Medicine Neurology & Gene Therapy who has strong scientific acumen, passion for innovation and leadership skills to join us in our Translational Medicine team, based in Braine l’Alleud,Belgium
About The Role
The business purpose of this position is to lead the Translational Medicine Neurology and Gene Therapy Physicians in delivering the Neurology and Gene Therapy portfolio through proof of concept (PoC). This role spans Neurology / Gene Therapy programmes from Discovery Research target identification (pre-DP0) through to clinical proof of concept (PoC) and the transition point to late phase development.
Who You’ll Work With
This role is part of our Translational Medicine activities in our Early Solutions department. The Head of Translational Medicine Neurology and Gene Therapy sits in a multidisciplinary team and joins a cross-functional matrix environment, you’ll have 5-8 direct reports. The team is very scientifically driven and shows tremendous passion for innovation.
What You’ll Do
- Define and shape the early-stage Neurology / Gene Therapy clinical portfolio up to and including PoC. This role will primarily focus on provision of therapeutic area expertise to Discovery Research, clinical indication strategy definition and design and execution of Translational Medicine studies in support of Discovery and early development programmes.
- Provide senior clinical expertise into Neurology / Gene Therapy disease area strategy and Discovery projects, contributing to the development of clinical programme strategies that build on UCB’s strengths and unique capabilities, emphasizing patient value and innovation and ensuring the highest probability of success across the portfolio.
- Develop overall strategy for Translational Medicine in the Neurology / Gene Therapy disease area.
- Represent Translational Medicine at internal governance boards eg DPM, ADB, PSB.
- Build an external network of KOLs and work closely with these individuals to ensure Translational Medicine studies are designed and delivered in a way which ensures quality data to inform future decisions.
- Contribute to business development opportunities which result in the acquisition of licensing of new medicines which advance the Neurology / Gene Therapy portfolio.
- Lead and line manage a team of physicians and biomarker specialists who work extensively through internal and external networks to deliver on the Neurology / Gene Therapy disease area strategy.
- Foster a strong culture of innovation and creativity.
Interested? For this role we’re looking for the following education, experience and skills
- Minimum qualifications: Medical Doctor (MBBS and MRCP or equivalent) with PhD or MD (preferred).
- Minimum experience: significant medical practice experience in Neurology specialty and ideally in Gene Therapy on top; and more than 10 years industry experience including early clinical development / Translational Medicine.
- Excellent medical and/or scientific knowledge of Neurological disorders / Gene Therapy
- Proven industry track record in managing teams, delivering programmes and setting strategy for Translational Medicine programmes in Neurology / Gene Therapy
- Strategic and holistic thinker, is able to suggest and drive new opportunities for short and long term gains within projects and business
- Strong collaborator and effective matrix leader and contributor: Works with a collaborative mindset with other functions and demonstrates by own actions in terms of both leadership and participation, while also being able to influence without authority
