Functieomschrijving:
In the framework of a research project funded by the Belgian Defence and conducted at the Royal Military Academy, we are looking for a research scientist/engineer with a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Applied Sciences, Engineering Sciences), Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics.
The Royal Military Academy of Belgium (RMA) is a military institution responsible for the basic academic, military and physical training of future officers and for the continuing advanced training of officers during their active career in the Belgian Defence department (www.rma.ac.be). It is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities. The Royal Military Academy is conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the Belgian Defence department or external sources.

Main tasks:
The DAP/21-06 project consists in designing and optimizing the network architecture for tactical UHF/VHF networks by employing a single UAV as a relay or multiple UAVs forming a Flying Ad hoc Network. The military need, described by scenarios, and the actual state-of-the-art will be the starting point of the research project and lead to a first design. The complete radio-stack of the design will be simulated for evaluation and optimization purposes. Next, a testbed based on software defined radios will be created to validate the design.
UAV-aided telecommunication networks have gained a lot of interest within the research community but more research is needed before this type of networks become trustworthy solutions. Most of the research performed in this domain considers a scenario where the UAVs serve as base stations for cellular networks. This project will focus on optimizing military VHF/UHF tactical networks by employing UAVs.
The project will be led by the “Communications, Information, Systems and Sensors (CISS)” department and the Mathematics department of the Royal Military Academy. Mathias Becquaert will integrate the successful candidate in the “Radio Network” research unit. This research unit is part of the CISS department where about 25 researchers are active.
This project can lead to a PhD.
More info about the project: please contact Mathias BECQUAERT mathias.becquaert@rma.ac.be
The project is a four-year project and will start on the 1st September 2021 or date to be coordinated ICCW the candidate.
