VACANCY NOTICE EUROGEOSURVEYS - SCIENTIFIC OFFICER
Who we are?
EuroGeoSurveys is the organisation representing the Geological Surveys of Europe. Through the collaborative research and activities of our Expert Groups and Task Forces, and provision of open-access, harmonised geological maps, data, and data infrastructure, we provide the European Institutions, regulators, industry, and the public, with expert, balanced and practical pan-European geoscience data and advice to guide policy and to address key societal challenges. https://eurogeosurveys.org/
What are we looking for?
The Scientific Officer works under the authority of the Secretary General and is based in Brussels, so a European work permit is required. S/he has a geoscientific background – master’s degree minimum – as well as good team work, relationship-building, and communication skills. Multitasking, fast and hard-working, and with a focus on detail, the Scientific Officer is engaged in all the technical and scientific activities in which the Secretariat is involved, including research projects, and in the overall organisation’s scientific strategy and activities. Able to deal with several duties at a time and to work under strict deadlines, s/he applies an inquisitive approach to problem-solving and a friendly attitude in supporting colleagues. A self-starter, s/he uses analytical skills for quality control.
S/he works in close cooperation with EGS Secretariat staff members, either keeping them updated of activities directly carried out, or interacting with them for those activities requiring team work. Moreover, s/he participates in the day-to-day functioning of the Secretariat, including carrying out administrative and secretariat duties.
Preference will be given to applicants with a strong background in EU institutions and EU funded project management experience. Spanish and French language skills will be seen as an asset. Some travel within and outside of Europe will be required.
Major duties include:
- Project management (EU Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation, EU-financed Grant contracts) including responding to open calls, preparing new project proposals, ECAS submission, preparing Grant and Consortium Agreements, project implementation, leading WPs, monitoring and coordination of project activities, financial and technical reporting, managing project finances, project closure and post-project activities.
- Implement project activities according to Grant and Consortium Agreements including preparing project deliverables, coordination of Linked Third Parties, participation in project meetings and organization of webinars and workshops and conferences, ensuring the smooth running of these events including the participation of speakers and stakeholders.
- Monitoring EU developments (policy, legislation, consultations, calls for participation to Expert Groups, opportunities to participate in projects, etc.) of potential interest to the EGS Members, and reporting those developments as appropriate, identifying EGS relevant issues and synthesising the information in written format.
- Contributing to the implementation of the EGS Strategy and contributing to the implementation of the Work-programme. This includes providing technical support and scientific advice, and informing, in a timely manner, the Communication Officer of news suitable for dissemination internally or externally and providing technical support and scientific advice to relevant staff members.
- Preparing or responding to different questionnaires, and collecting data from the members and carrying out statistical analyses (e.g. the EGS annual statistics and the EGS research project database); conducting related assessments, analyses and studies for reporting purposes.
- Acting as the first point of contact for enquiries by members of Expert Groups, providing them with assistance, and filtering contacts and requests by EGS members and external stakeholders, including the electronic mail received in the common mailbox; Informing and engaging the EGS Expert Groups about the latest relevant topic related events, activities, campaigns, initiatives at European and international level; Building and maintaining close relations with the Expert Groups by working closely with the Chairs, Deputy Chairs and national experts to support and coordinate the work of EGS Experts Groups and looking for synergies between them and other organizations, institutions and relevant stakeholders.
- Supporting the Office staff, particularly the Communication Officer, in interacting with EGS Members, providing the needed support and interacting with EGS stakeholders; Support to office management and organisation of EGS statutory meetings, and project-related events e.g. seminars and end-user meetings and technical workshops, preparing and attending meetings, and reporting the outcomes in a written format when required.
