Job title:Head of Underwriting, Motor Business Line

Location:France, UK, Spain, Belgium or Germany


OVERVIEW

The Head of Underwriting, reporting to the Head of Motor Business Line, is in charge of managing the Motor portfolio performance (45% of the total turnover of AXA Partners), including definition of action plans (lapse, cancellation, repricing). They give guidance to the underwriting team to perform the monthly monitoring of the portfolio with the AXA Partners local geographies, produce dashboards and liaise with the Finance for the P&L impacts.


As Head of Underwriting, you will be responsible for underwriting activities that includes pricing calculation and financial and fiscal schemes. You will provide support and approval for their team members, and for local underwriters in the AXA Partners geographies, on national and international underwriting requests. You may conduct research analysis and underwriting for special or complex deals.
You will work with GAM and KAM (Global and Key Account Manager) to prepare AXA Partners’ proposals for the international tenders, perform a risk assessment of the deals, prepare the financial offer and manage its validation by the AXA Partners Risk Committee & AXA Group. You will actively participate in the negotiations with the client.
You will lead strategic planning and budget target settings processes and be responsible for controlling and monitoring quantitative targets on a regular basis. You will also lead the construction of the global product and contract domain as part of the transformation program.
You will confer with Management and Executives to set department guidelines and objectives, and ensure that the underwriting and pricing guidelines are applied by all the stakeholders.
Your ultimate goal is to drive a disciplined underwriting policy, provide a clear view of portfolio profitability, improve technical excellence (including underwriting), pilot and monitor P&L KPIs ensuring consistency with Motor Business Line strategy deployment and in strong collaboration with all the different countries.


DIMENSIONS OF ROLE

  • Leading monitoring & measurement of portfolio profitability for the 35 Partners geographies, incl. definition and follow-up related action plan linked to repricing, pruning and lapses impact
  • Pricing of Motor international tenders, participating in the international deals negotiation along with the GAM/KAM
  • Leading Strategic Planning & Budget target setting processes, incl. identification of related key initiatives
  • Controlling & monitoring Quantitative targets on a regular basis (incl. follow up)
  • Leading the construction of the global Product and Contract domain (asset) as part of Transformation program and in charge of product simplification
  • Defining, supervising the Motor Business Line Pricing & Underwriting rules and guidelines in line with AP’s UW policy and ensuring they are understood and applied across countries

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Performance Monitoring
  • Maintain a data base of all the Motor contracts to be monitored (more than several thousand deals)
  • Define and follow up with local underwriters the action plans for lapses, pruning and repricing; and estimation of the impact on the P&L
  • Review profitability of big deals and anticipate the renewals
  • Liaise with Finance team for alignment on the P&L impacts of portfolio monitoring actions
Pricing of International tenders
  • Deploy the right governance in the team to succeed in providing timely answers to the international tenders (on average 5 tenders per year with more than double digit M€ turnover)
  • Define and implement international financial schemes and liaise with finance and operation to estimate the impact of each scheme
  • Price international large deals: prepare accurate quotes that are competitive for the client and profitable for AXA Partners.
  • Maintain a costing reference: collaborate with the Motor Business Line network manager to collect and update data about the benefits costs in each country (35 geographies and more than 50 correspondents in the countries where AXA Partners is not present)
  • contribute to commercial propositions and participate to the different rounds of negotiation with the clients
Management of large deals validation
  • Ensure support for the underwriters in the AXA Partners geographies
  • Review pricing methodology and T&Cs for large deals: Animate a network of underwriter and share best practices within the network to ensure a good level of risk assessment
  • Validate pricing for large deals: all he deals with an annual turnover of more than XXX k€ must be reported to the Underwriting committee and reviewed and validated centrally (around 100 deals per year)
Strategic planning and budget
  • Set underwriting department strategic planning and budget
  • Identify key initiatives for strategic goals
  • Monitor quantitative targets on a regular basis
  • Define and deliver best in practice underwriting strategy
Transformation program
  • Lead construction of the global product and contract domain
  • Participate in the product simplification and standardisation
Pricing guidelines
  • Update underwriting and pricing guidelines
  • Ensure application of underwriting governance and guidelines
  • Animate a community of local underwriters and set up a monthly meetings with each geography to discuss any underwriting topic of interest and share with the community the expertise
  • Experienced and confident executive, with a strong background in international project management
  • Experience of working effectively as part of an Executive Committee that is spread across international locations
  • Ability to link and cooperate with the various stakeholders: internal (IT, Network, Operations, etc.), member of the validation committees (Head of TEX, CRO, CEO) and local geographies (CEO, sales team, Underwriters, etc.)
  • Effective analytical and problem solving skills and a logical approach to work
  • Confident decision making skills to weigh the risks and costs
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
