Synatom is looking for an Investment Manager - Illiquid Assets for Brussels.
Synatom – a 100% subsidiary of ENGIE Electrabel – is responsible for the management of the entire fuel cycle for the Belgian nuclear power plants. Synatom answers for the purchase of uranium to the supply of enriched uranium to produce fuel assemblies. Synatom also stands for the management of spent fuel, from its unloading from the reactor pools until its final disposal. Since 2003, is also legally responsible for establishing and managing Belgium’s nuclear provisions, i.e. financial resources which are set aside to eventually cover the costs of nuclear power plant decommissioning and of the final storage of the irradiated fissile materials.
With the commitment of ENGIE Electrabel to finance the full amount of nuclear waste provisions, Synatom will become one of the largest fund manager in Belgium. An important part of these assets will be invested in illiquid assets, such as private debt, private equity, infrastructure, and real estate.
Synatom’s investment team is responsible to ensure the real value of the fund, considering the long-term liabilities, by defining and implementing the long-term strategy for the investments. The successful candidate will report into the Chief Investment Officer.

What will this professinal challenge consist of?

  • as Investment Manager - Illiquid assets, you will formulate the strategy for the illiquid part of the portfolio together with the CIO, with the aim of building up a portfolio in line with the long-term strategic asset allocation and investment approach approved by the investment committee
  • you will ensure the implementation of this strategy through the selection and monitoring of external managers
  • you will also have the oversight on operational and administrative aspects of the portfolio including the ramp-up process (i.e. capital calls, reinvestment of dividends, etc.)

For this challenging position, we are looking for the following qualifications:

  • you have a university degree or equivalent in economics or finance. An additional degree (e.g. CFA) is a plus
  • you have a financial experience of at least 5 years in selecting illiquid asset managers or managing illiquid portfolios
  • you have a good knowledge of investment vehicles and their fiscal implications
  • you are pragmatic, persuasive, imaginative and well organized
  • you respect the ethics and governance rules
  • you are trilingual: French, Dutch and English
