Johnson & Johnson’s Global Public Health (GPH) unit has a longstanding commitment to addressing unmet needs of underserved populations. Our goal is to build new innovative products addressing key public health challenges and this includes building robust external engagements with key public and private institutions across the world. Due to current Covid pandemic global public health is passing through challenging times, but this adversity is also increasing the pace of scientific, technological, and medical innovations. We at GPH are looking for a senior leader, who will take two key responsibilities - help build our antimicrobial research portfolio for tacking serious bacterial infections of highest unmet medical need by building new discovery partnerships and identify and evaluate external opportunities. GPH aims to respond to the global challenge of AMR through R&D product innovation and strong partnerships that advance our AMR agenda. We aim to Discover and develop novel antibiotics addressing serious pathogens with focus on AMR in LMIC. AMR is one of the top 10 Global Public Health Threats as per WHO. A failure to address the problem of AMR could result in 10M deaths every year by 2050 with 1 person dying every 3 seconds and it will cost some 100 trillion USD to global economy. Most of the direct and much of the indirect impact of AMR will fall on LMICs and as such AMR also called a “Silent Pandemic”. This role qualifies a person with domain expertise in infectious diseases, early discovery research, public health portfolio management, garnering external funding/financing among key attributes. As AMR leader the role will help the GPH organization to identify and partner innovative assets, products, or solutions in for serious WHO priority pathogens. will closely interact with our colleagues in London This successful candidate will have the responsibility to partner with our global discovery organization, global Discovery centers as well as Janssen’s Global External Innovation network that includes our Global Innovation Centers. The role helps GPH to accelerate the development of an innovative project portfolio and build-up portfolio of drugs for addressing AMR pandemic. In this exciting role, you will: Lead discovery efforts to get the NMEs and molecules addressing key AMR pathogens. Identify and triage external opportunities consistent with the agreed GPH portfolio strategy. Identify new funding and public financing opportunities to establish new discovery programs at SDCs for public health as well as new funding partnerships for supporting internal programs. Build cross-functional teams to efficiently assess newer collaborations and alliance opportunities. Develop collaborative plan with our discovery teams and external partners to help drive the SDC agenda and everyday functioning. Develop, cultivate, and manage relationships with Janssen Innovation Centers, JLabs and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation personnel at each of the global locations to enhance networking opportunities and to partner capabilities Identify, establish, and maintain a broad network of relationships with Industry, academic institutions, and biotech partners worldwide. Stay current with emerging scientific, technological, and medical innovations within the field. Qualifications An advanced degree with an MD or PhD in infection biology, immunology biochemistry, molecular biology or other health science is required 10+ years’ experience with proven track record in Pharma/Biotech or academic AMR drug discovery and early development. Expertise of building scientific partnerships, engaging with external funding environment is desirable. The ability to develop and maintain strong strategic partnerships, both internal and external, is also required. Demonstrates excellent communication skills and ability to matrix manage in a complex team environment is required Previous experience in conducting research in infectious disease is preferred.
