Introduction

MIX.LY brings hyper personalisation to drinks using AI and robotics, activating and empowering the creativity of both bartenders and customers.

Customers, assisted by a host, create their flavour profile on an iPad, which sends this information to the robot. Few seconds later a unique and tailor made drink is ready! Bartender brings the drink to perfection by adding the right garnish.

This concept brings technology and people together to create high quality personalised experiences.

Problem statement

Currently, the cocktail robot depends on a stable internet connection to connect to backend services (containing both the queueing logic, and the cocktail generation logic). Our machine has built-in 3G/4G connectivity with multiple providers to support this connection, but we still frequently run into situations where the mobile coverage is not adequate.

Removing our reliance on this connectivity both makes the device more reliable, and easier to operate as a self-contained unit.

Assignment

The goal of this internship is to migrate these services onto the embedded platform of the cocktail generator itself. This poses a number of challenges:

  • Currently we use a cloud provider to host/monitor the backend services.

We need to handle this internally on the embedded platform.

  • The embedded platform is resource constrained, so it might not be possible to run the cocktail generation algorithm in real time. An alternative solution will be necessary in this case.

  • We need a way to synchronize the data between the machine and our platform once in a while (update parameters, upload metrics/logs for analysis).

Your task is to build a POC that tackles the above challenges, and demonstrates the feasibility of the approach above.

Requirements

  • You have to be a university student whose university is able to provide an internship agreement.

  • Experience/interest with embedded Linux systems.

  • Python programming knowledge or equivalent programming experience.

  • You are comfortable with diving into existing code bases.

  • Excellent problem solving and debugging skills.

  • Keen interest in cocktails/mocktails :)

  • Since this is a hybrid hardware/software project, it is required that you can work in our Ghent office to access the cocktail machine.
