To strengthen our External Manufacturing Drug Substance (DS) Team, based in our External Manufacturing Department in Braine-l’Alleud, Belgium, we are looking to fill the position of: External Manufacturing Operations Lead.


The External Manufacturing Operations (EMO) Lead is accountable for:


  • Leading the operational management of UCB’s selected Global Contract Manufacturers Organizations (CMO’s) & Strategic Vendors active in commercial manufacturing of PharmaDrug Substance.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of the UCB industrial manufacturing strategy.


You will more precisely contribute by:


  • Performing day to day operational management of selected CMO’s & strategic suppliers. Facilitate and coordinate periodic meetings between CMO’s and UCB multifunctional teams.
  • Participating in the CMO selection for new and existing products (new products in cooperation with industrial leads) within the UCB manufacturing network and support establishment of business and quality contract.
  • Delivering technical expertise to support UCB’s CMO in order to ensure effective processes, optimize capacity utilization and deliver according state of the art quality standard. Leading project groups, if appropriate.
  • Performing first line troubleshooting at CMO’s in scope and lead investigations and CAPA implementation in case of complex, business relevant technical and supply issues.
  • Performing product reviews together with QA, Supply Chain, Strategic Relationship Lead and Purchasing.
  • Preparing the Business and Operations Plan with the Strategic Relationship Lead, defining the operational management & commercial strategy of the CMO/suppliers in scope for the coming years.
  • Monitoring CMO’s capacities and implementing products long range plans in coordination with Supply Chain planners and DS industrial leads.
  • Delivering Technical Expertise for Continuous Improvement of CoG’s during the life cycle of all products in scope at the CMOs.
  • Leading multifunctional teams to ensure tech transfers, validation, investigation and business support activities to/from CMO’s for existing and new products support regulatory submissions related to these projects.
  • Driving CMO risk analysis and implement identified mitigation plans.
  • Developing and evaluating business cases and prepare recommendations for make or buy of respective products.
  • Maintaining and sharing technology knowledge and CMO market intelligence. Maintaining and sharing DS process and product knowledge of outsourced manufacturing activities at CMO (preparation of technical agreement when relevant).
  • Leading or participating in transversal initiative/project to develop the Operational Excellence culture into External Manufacturing and Partnering.


Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:


  • Master’s Degree.
  • At least 3 to 5 years’ experience in a similar role OR in any relevant Operations Management role within a GMP environment.
  • Experience in international exposure in Pharma Project Management.
  • Strong technical knowledges.
  • Fluent in English (Written & Spoken).

  • Strong leadership in order to influence External Partners to deliver.
