Job description

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally-owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. The objective of the Better Migration Management (BMM) programme is that national authorities and institutions are able to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration and effectively address and reduce the trafficking in human beings and the smuggling of migrants within and from the Horn of Africa region through a human-rights-based approach.

The Programme is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the European Union and is commissioned from October 2019 to September 2022. The implementation is facilitated through an Implementing Partnership consisting of IOM, UNODC, CIVIPOL, British Council, and the lead agency GIZ. The programme’s interventions target countries in the Horn of Africa region, i.e. Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. The coordination unit in Brussels coordinates, manages and steers the implementation in the partner countries and supports all the field teams in all relevant processes (procurement, contracting, financial guidance, reporting, communication, M&E, provision of technical expertise, etc,). The programme intern is:

  • Supporting communication and visibility measures of the programme
  • Assisting the preparation of planning and scoping workshops
  • Supporting the knowledge management system

Your tasks

The international intern will support the:

  • Supervision and supporting of social media activities of the programme
  • Monitoring of external publication about the programme
  • Supporting the creation of communication material (research, social media, storytelling)
  • Supporting the coordination of communication measures of the implementing partner in the partner countries
  • Supporting the advisory of visibility requirements
  • Drafting of information material for the programme
  • Assisting in the organisation of meetings and workshops
  • Contributing to any other task assigned by the Programme Director

Your profile

  • You are studying in the third semester (or higher) in a relevant subject e.g. Journalism, Communication, Public Relation or related studies
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English Skills
  • French and/ or Arabic is an asset
  • Previous experience in communication, journalism, public relation
  • Previous experience in international cooperation and/or development cooperation
  • Previous experience in sub-Sahara Africa is an asset
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, and ability to work effectively and build relationships with others
  • Very good organisational and planning skills based on past work or school experiences
  • Work diligently and precisely (i.e. when handling data and project documents)
