Job Purpose and Impact

The Material Scientist will use knowledge of material science to provide technical expertise in support of research projects at Cargill. We seek a professional to improve and optimize existing methods in protein and materials characterization using a wide range of physical-chemical instrumentation. The incumbent will also collaborate with multi-disciplinary research and development teams involving an understanding of food, ingredient and material systems.

As Material Scientist, you will use scientific tools to provide materials characterization and data analysis.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provide hands-on support to other research activities within the group including material forensics, materials characterization involving spectroscopy, microscopy, rheology, particle size and shape analysis, X-ray diffraction, mechanical and thermal testing.
  • Stay abreast of current research, literature and analytical advancements.
  • Partner and communicate regularly with stakeholders such as project managers, business or group management, production, outside vendors, or technology providers.
  • Identify and examine technical problems and determine solutions needed, using analytical techniques, for materials characterization.
  • Operate and maintain instruments and develop methods for materials characterization.
  • Provide training, coaching and mentoring to team members.
  • Independently solve moderately complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience
  • Other minimum qualifications may apply
Preferred Qualifications
  • More than 5 years’ experience or PhD degree in Physical Chemistry, Food Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field applied on protein containing matrices
  • More than 5 years’ experience in materials characterization techniques, soft matter physics, colloidal physics, interfacial science
  • Experience working with (vegetal) proteins and their applications.
  • Ability to work within a global team, connect with colleagues from other regions and translate the scientific results to the local needs
  • Confirmed working knowledge of scientific research principles, concepts, practices, and standards
  • Ability to lead the acquisition and development of new analytical techniques
