ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is one of the most important education and research institutions in the Low Countries. On a daily basis, 15,000 staff members and 50,000 students implement its motto "Dare to Think". Ghent University’s mission statement is characterised by qualitative education, internationally renowned research and a pluralistic social responsibility.
ASSIGNMENT
Academic education
You will teach various courses in the field of health sociology and general sociology in the bachelor in sociologie (in Dutch), the bachelor in social sciences, the master sociologie (in Dutch), and the master sociology. A standard mandate generally includes three courses, in addition to supervising about ten bachelor’s papers and about ten master’s theses.
For a high-quality fulfillment of the teaching assignment, we attach equal importance to the substantive and pedagogical quality as to the social-organizational dimension. The first, more classical, dimension of teaching quality concerns both the teaching style, described as the ability to teach clearly and enthusiastically/inspiringly, and the subject-specific competence and vision. Specifically, you are a versatile generalist with a focus on health sociology, who:
- - possesses the subject-specific expertise to teach both general introductory sociology courses and more specialized courses in health sociology,
- - can contribute to methodological or applied scientific (e.g., policy-oriented competencies) courses in addition to theoretical-content courses,
- - can convey the course content clearly and enthusiastically to (very) large groups in the early bachelor’s years and to smaller groups,
- - can teach in both Dutch and English.
The second, social-organizational, dimension of teaching concerns the competence in innovatively and flexibly organizing the teaching process aimed at optimally supporting and challenging students. You therefore have the necessary competencies and experience to shape academic education as a complex social process. This includes, among other things:
- - the ability to organize educational activities tailored to the student population present,
- - insight and experience in organizational innovation, coaching, and diversity-sensitive teaching.
Academic research
You are a dynamic and innovative scientist whose research focuses on the social determinants of health, health disparities, health care systems, or related areas within the sociology of health and illness. You connect the sociology of health and illness with sociological theory/sociological debates, and work based on innovative empirical research using advanced qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. You have the necessary competencies to organize and further develop the Hedera research group in a sustainable and healthy manner. This includes, firstly, the ability to collaborate constructively with colleagues from all levels: junior and senior researchers, professors, and administrative staff. This collaboration fundamentally starts from a listening and coaching attitude, with a particular focus on respecting each other’s boundaries. Stimulating a healthy organizational culture is crucial in this regard. Secondly, this includes the ability to develop sustainable initiatives that strengthen the competencies of the research group members and improve the functioning of the research group. Thirdly, this includes building bridges to other research groups and clusters within and outside UGent.
Academic services
You actively participate in the internal and external services of the Department of Sociology.
