In Belgium, Takeda is one of the top-ten largest pharmaceutical companies, with an important manufacturing site in Lessines (Hainaut) and over 1,300 employees in Belgium.

We are looking for a strong candidate for the position of Corporate Communications & Public Affairs Manager. This position reports to the Head Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Patient Advocacy (Head CCPA)

Role Objective
  • Create and execute communication strategies that align with the corporate business objectives and reinforce the reputation and employer branding of Takeda in Belgium and Luxemburg
  • Support the Head CCPA in the roll-out of the long term Public Affairs & Communications Plan for the therapeutic areas, with cross-departmental actions, and with a focus on both internal and external communication
  • Collaborate with the internal EUCAN Corporate Communications team and local HR department on employee engagement activities
  • Build and sustain external relationships with key societal and political healthcare stakeholders, including media. Act as first point of contact and spokesperson for local media enquiries;
  • Representing Takeda in selected key industry associations in Belgium and Luxembourg.

Accountabilities

Communications - general
  • Support key outward facing functions such as CCPA, Medical Affairs and Market Access to position & communicate medical, scientific and social-economic value of Takeda’s innovations
  • Support the Business Units in translating their messages into strong and robust communication strategies
  • Mitigate risk by nurturing strong relationships with key external stakeholders including media, industry professional groups as well key internal stakeholders
  • Support the senior leadership team with considered counsel on reputation related matters and leading issues preparations and response
  • Support the HR Department for employer branding
  • Support all employees to maintain the integrity of the corporate brand, ensuring all usage of the brand (whether external or internal) complies with company guidelines
  • Ensure that all communications materials and activities comply with Takeda operating procedures and the relevant local or European industry regulations

Media relations
  • Based on the priorities of the Communications and Public Affairs plan, increase Takeda’s media footprint
  • Identity and maintain working relationships with key journalists and bloggers and act as a first point of contact and spokesperson for local media requires
  • Ensure on-time delivery of regional media monitoring, key message development and company press events – working in partnership with local market communications leads where appropriate
  • Monitor outcomes against measurable objectives and indicators e.g. media coverage, social media conversations, content analysis, website analysis

Internal communications
  • Partner with Head CCPA, General Managing and key functions (e.g. Human Resources) to develop compelling content to support EUCAN and local subsidiary communications
  • Develop creative internal communication programs, informing employees of important company-related news
  • Showcase the success of external corporate communications initiatives within the company (locally and at EUCAN level), ensuring the employees are made aware of key activities before they are communicated externally
  • Collaborate with internal EUCAN Corporate Communications Manager on employee engagement activities

Reputation and issues management
  • Drive Takeda awareness and reputation amongst key journalists and priority stakeholders
  • Proactively manage issues and mitigate risk through
    • Overseeing environmental monitoring/listening (both traditional and social/digital media)
    • Leading the development and maintenance of an issues management/crisis communication plan and the resources required to adhere to it
    • Engaging with key internal and external stakeholders to identify emerging issues and develop appropriate responses

Corporate brand
  • Drive internal and external corporate brand building to reinforce the company’s positioning among key stakeholders, through
    • Driving awareness of Takeda’s Communications priorities, maximizing Takeda owned digital and social media channels and external channels (e.g. media)
    • Identifying external opportunities to profile the company and its senior leaders

Public Affairs & External Relations
  • Map & gather insights of the health care environment
  • In collaboration with the Head CCPA and in support of the Market Access Department, monitor and analyze new government and stakeholder initiatives, potential changes in law and broader developments (including parliamentary activities regarding healthcare).
  • Identify key trends, and identify areas of common interest in order to develop projects and partnerships with health care provider associations
  • Proactively assess their business consequences in Belgium and Luxembourg, in close collaboration with other teams (Market Access, Regulatory, Medical, Business Units)
  • Identify and approach stakeholders and influencers to understand common points of interest or similar priorities in their agendas
  • Act as Takeda representative in selected platforms of discussion
  • Enhance visibility and reputation both within and outside the pharmaceutical industry, e.g. through implementation of corporate programs, at conferences, symposia, industry association meetings

Technical Expertise

Communications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to make complex issues easy to understand; good affinity to adapt messaging to the relevant audiences
  • Understanding of the opportunities presented by digital and social media platforms
  • Demonstrable success/experience in driving corporate awareness and implementing corporate positioning and transformation initiatives both internally and externally
  • Extensive network of national media/journalists contacts

Public Affairs
  • In-depth understanding of the socio-economic, political and healthcare environment in Belgium
  • Ability to translate public affairs objectives in a strategic action plan
  • Excellent analytical skills and strategic thinking to understand and address stakeholders needs
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills
  • Experience in relationships building and management with internal and external key stakeholders; key account management skills
  • Is aware of and able to work within all local laws, regulations, incl. internal compliance

Digital Aptitude

Qualification
  • Full professional proficiency in Dutch, French and English is mandatory
  • Academic qualifications (e.g. Master of Communication Science, Master in Journalism & Media, Public Relations, Political Science, Economy or similar)
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills are essential
  • General interest in current events (Belgium, Europe, global)
  • In-depth knowledge of the political and socio-economic environment, and the Belgian healthcare system
  • Established and proven stakeholder networking capabilities is mandatory
  • Previous experience in the pharmaceutical and/or healthcare sector or demonstrated experience in a similar public affairs / communications position (min 3 years) in a highly regulated industry, trade association, consultancy or related organization/field
  • Good understanding of the challenges of the innovative pharmaceutical sector and the healthcare sector in general
  • Experience in public speaking
