Why GSK

GSK is a global biopharma company with a special purpose – to unite science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together – so we can positively impact the health of billions of people and deliver stronger, more sustainable shareholder returns – as an organisation where people can thrive.

Getting ahead means preventing disease as well as treating it, and we aim to impact the health of 2.5 billion people around the world in the next 10 years. Our R&D focus is to deliver a new generation of vaccines and medicines using the science of the immune system, human genetics and advanced technologies to get ahead of infectious diseases, HIV, cancer and other immune-mediated and respiratory diseases. We do all this with a commitment to operate responsibly for all our stakeholders by prioritising Innovation, Performance and Trust.

Our bold ambitions for patients are reflected in new commitments to growth and a significant step-change in delivery over the next five years. This means more GSK vaccines and medicines, including innovative new products, will reach more people who need them than ever before.

We have long believed that building trust is key to stronger performance, helping to create value for shareholders, impact for patients and society and a reason outstanding people choose to work for and with us. That’s why being a responsible business is an integral part of our strategy. Taking action on environmental, social and governance issues is a key driver in our strategy.

Our success absolutely depends on our people. While getting ahead of disease together is about our ambition for patients and shareholders, it’s also about making GSK a place where people can thrive. We want GSK to be a place where people feel inspired, encouraged and challenged to be the best they can be. A place where they can be themselves – feeling welcome, valued and included. Where they can keep growing and look after their wellbeing. So, if you share our ambition, join us at this exciting moment in our journey to get Ahead Together.

GSK Supply Chain

We make and supply medicines and vaccines all around the globe and our teams own every production stage, from creating quality products at our manufacturing sites to designing effective supply forecasting and regulatory inspections; all powered by digital, data and analytics. We operate at impressive scale, producing over 1.7 billion packs of medicine and 767 vaccine doses in 2021.

Delivering billions of packs of medicines that make a positive change in the health of the world is something we take seriously, and we’re focused on delivering continuous improvement to make sure we’re more reliable, accountable and competitive. Responsibility and trust are both important when manufacturing and supplying high-quality and safe medicines and vaccines and we’re proud to play a leading role in driving our environmental sustainability goals to be carbon net-zero and nature net-positive by 2030.

We continue to modernise, so we can launch even more new products at speed whilst turbo-charging delivery across our entire portfolio through our relentless focus on quality, safety, and service. The way we work will change. For some, the shift in technology and products will be revolutionary. Our R&D pipeline demands a new kind of supply chain, and we need the very best minds and capability to help us on our journey to make more complex products, harnessing the power of automation and robotics so we can work smarter together.

GSK in vaccines

We are one of the world’s largest vaccines companies, delivering vaccines that help protect people from a range of diseases at all stages of life. Our portfolio of more than 20 vaccines is supplied to people living in over 160 countries and generated sales of £7 billion in 2021.

Our vaccines have been helping to protect people from serious disease for well over 100 years, with our Marietta (US) site dedicated to smallpox vaccine production since 1882. Today, our vaccines continue to tackle some of the world’s most devastating diseases, including pneumococcal disease, meningitis, hepatitis, rotavirus, whooping cough and influenza.

Our R&D focuses on developing vaccines against infectious diseases that combine high medical needs and strong market potential, and we have a pipeline of 21 such candidate vaccines in development at FY 2021. Our strategy is to bring differentiated and high-quality vaccines to as many people as possible. To achieve this, we focus on creating a strong patient and payer-focused pipeline, maintaining valuable partnerships with our local operating countries, and ensuring sustainable access and affordability.

On 16th August 2022, we announced that GSK had completed the acquisition of Affinivax, Inc, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Cambridge (Boston, Massachusetts). Affinivax has pioneered the development of a novel class of vaccines based on the highly innovative Multiple Antigen Presenting System (MAPS) platform technology, the most advanced of which are next-generation pneumococcal vaccines. The MAPS technology supports higher valency than conventional conjugation technologies, potentially enabling broader coverage against prevalent pneumococcal serotypes and generating higher antibody responses against many individual serotypes than current pneumococcal vaccines. Applicability of the technology has also been demonstrated for additional infectious disease pathogens, including those that cause hospital-acquired infections.

About Vaccines Manufacturing And Quality

Our vaccines are manufactured to the highest standards and distributed to the regions that need them most. Guaranteeing on-time and in full supply is critical, hence more than 70% of our talented vaccines workforce is based within Global Industrial Operations (GIO) – the vital business unit that manufactures and manages the entire vaccine supply process, from customer order to product dispatch, on a global scale.

GIO is structured into operating units covering every aspect of the manufacturing and supply process. These include Supply Chain Management, Technical Services, and our global network of vaccine manufacturing sites including facilities in Belgium, Germany, Singapore, the USA, France, Canada and Hungary.

Vaccines manufacturing is complex and, for some of our vaccines, the production process can take up to two years. On average, each batch of vaccine will have undergone more than 100 quality checks to ensure that it meets world-class standards before it is released. Each of our vaccines is produced to the same quality standard, regardless of where in the world it will be used.

We are continuously investing in our manufacturing facilities, improving our processes and building partnerships to ensure we meet the growing global needs for high quality vaccines.
