We are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our legal team at Veolia Belgium HQ in Brussels (soon to be at Bxl Midi)

As an active member of the legal department for Veolia Belgium and Luxembourg, the Legal Counsel will be called upon to (i) be a principal legal advisor to the business in all aspects of its activities, including contract negotiation, M&A, litigation, risk management, project structuring and financing, (ii) supervise corporate secretarial work for a part of the 50 Veolia Belux entities (iii) participate actively in project development in partnership with the commercial teams, (iv) ensure adherence to company risk management policies, (v) identify and implement improvements to facilitate risk management by our colleagues, and (vi) report to Belux General Counsel as well as Paris HQ legal department.

The role will relate to the Veolia’s group businesses primarily in the Belgium and Luxembourg, but may involve companies located in the Netherlands, France and Germany.

You will join a great and dynamic team of 6 lawyers, acting in a growing business and changing and resourcing the world.

Main Responsibilities

• Be an active and commercially minded force in contract negotiations (including M&A) and generally all aspects of managing legal risks including litigation and in-house training;
• Respond in a timely, constructive and commercially minded fashion to requests of internal and external stakeholders;
• Identify legal and other risks and opportunities associated with all aspects of company business and projects;
• Advise on measures to reduce, transfer, eliminate or manage identified risks;
• Preparing standard legal documentation;
• Participate in educating company personnel as to legal and other risk management considerations with a view to creating and fostering a broad risk management culture within the company;
• Generally, support and implement company strategic objectives and key projects identified from time to time by the company’s executive committee.
• 3 to 8 years’ experience in a similar position and/or a law firm;
• Experience with competition law would be a plus;
• Strong written and oral skills in French, Dutch and English; French Mother tongue would be plus; knowledge of German would be a plus;
• Demonstrated ability to work in teams; and provides us with some reference contacts;
• Strongly commercially and financially minded so as to place legal and risk management considerations in a broader commercial and financial context;
• Able to propose win-win solutions which allow contracts to be concluded;
• Willingness and ability to understand technical issues affecting the business;
• Experience with construction projects, insurance issues, M&A or financing matters would be a plus.
