The candidate will belong to CEDON - KU Leuven. The research Center of Economics and Corporate Sustainability CEDON is an interdisciplinary research group focusing on interactions between economics, business, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. Within CEDON about 20 economists, engineers and scientists are collaborating to help companies and society to realise sustainable development and CSR strategies. The Faculty of Economics and Business has four campuses and the position is related to our campus in Brussels. However, the candidate will perform his lab research at the Department of Earth and Environmental sciences at Campus Leuven.

Responsibilities

This research is framed withing the Horizon Europe project EXCEED (https://exceed-horizon.eu), a project dealing with cost-effective, sustainable and responsible extraction routes for recovering distinct critical metals and industrial minerals as by-products from key European hard-rock lithium projects.
This position is related to WP6 “Integrated environmental, human and techno-economic assessment”.
The aim is to evaluate the solid-phase speciation of the potentially hazardous elements, linked to their leaching, and changes in leaching behaviour (short and long term) during the processing of Li LCT-pegmatite and rare-metal granite hard-rock resources.
You will perform a chemical and mineralogical characterization of materials, as well as different tests to evaluate the environmental and human heath impacts of the materials. You are responsible for the interpretation and reporting of the results (periodic reports and presentations).

Profile

You should have obtained a PhD or Master degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology, Chemistry or (Bio)engineering sciences with a strong interest in environmental geochemistry by July 2023. You are highly motivated, critical and can work independently. Preference will be given to candidates with proven research experience, including lab work (leaching tests, bioaccessibility tests, chemical and mineralogical characterization of materials), geochemical modeling, interpretation and reporting of results.
You may also have the opportunity to interact with partners from the EXCEED consortium.
Fluency in both spoken and written English and good reporting and presentation skills are a prerequisite. Knowledge of Dutch is not mandatory.
