Counsel, Switching Services
Overview:

Mastercard is a technology company in the global payments business, connecting cardholders, customers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses worldwide.

The commercial lawyer will support the daily operations of the EEA Switch, a separate and independent business unit within Mastercard Europe SA (“EEA Switch”). The position is a Counsel level, with a reporting line into the Senior Managing Counsel – Switching Services. The commercial lawyer will be a member of the EEA Switch team as well as a member of the Law & Franchise Integrity (LFI) team.

The commercial lawyer will support the Senior Managing Counsel - Switching Services in managing the contract-related and corporate work for the EEA Switch business unit, as well as other day-to-day legal tasks (such as legal advice to the EEA Switch team) that may be required. This position is based in Waterloo, Belgium.

Role
In this role, you will support the Senior Managing Counsel - Switching Services primarily in the following tasks:

  • Generally responsible for all legal support related to the EEA Switch business (geographical scope: the EEA Member States and UK), incl. assisting the sales team in managing and mitigating legal and commercial risks.
  • Contract-related work includes:
  • drafting, review and negotiation of the contracts.
  • overview of existing commercials conditions to help the EEA Switch respond to RFPs with large customers.
  • managing the inventory and database of contracts with customers and suppliers, including execution, archiving and related activities in the contract administration databases Ironclad.
  • Corporate-related work, such as preparing PoAs and organisation of meetings of the EEA Switching Committee.
  • Manage external legal counsel in the assigned countries.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments in the assigned countries.
  • Conduct legal training/monitoring of global Law Department policies such as contract policy training; regular review of the relevant procedures and processes (such as contract process)
  • Work together with the other members of the Law Department, both in Europe and the rest of the world, in view of delivering an outstanding service to the business in a spirit of an integrated and streamlined approach which fits both into the local/regional and global strategy.

All about you

  • Education: qualified to practice in law in one or more Belgian/European jurisdictions
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the financial, banking or technology sector.
  • Interest in payment system industry, technology and innovation.
  • Strong business acumen, good commercial judgment and creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Flexible, self-motivated and initiative-driven; having a positive, “can do it” attitude.
  • Enjoy working in a team and enjoy sharing knowledge, but able to work independently and take on responsibilities.
  • Good planning and efficiency in handling a long pipeline is of essence; having attention to detail but able to prioritize on the important matters and get the job done.
  • Proficiency in English (multi-language skills are an important asset)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be able to contribute and operate effectively within a diverse multicultural organization.
  • Very good Excel skills; experience with the Ironclad and SFDC databases is an asset.
