The IOA offers a specialised two-year fulltime programme to singers and pianists from all over the world, to prepare them for future professional careers as opera singers or repetiteurs. The IOA cooperates with a variety of partners: opera houses, music theatres, concert halls and orchestras.

Selection criteria

The following aspects are taken into consideration in the jury’s review throughout auditions:
Musical (singing/piano) technique:
Students are able to ‘decipher’ a score’s musical line quickly and fluently;
Students understand the score’s expression and other indications;
Students possess the technical potential to sing the arias and ensembles of the repertoire within their respective Fach;
Students demonstrate a basic knowledge of the existence and content of different musical styles (baroque, classicism, etc.; ‘national’ styles; specific composers’ styles).

Language knowledge (in communication and in used repertoire):
Students are able to express themselves fluently in English;
Students demonstrate basic levels (esp. regarding musical diction and expression) of Italian, French, German and English.

Interpretation;
Presentation (posture, stage presence);
Growing potential;
Motivation.

What we offer

  • An up-to-date curriculum, responding to the changing reality of opera/music theatre;
  • Engaged teachers and artists with direct ties to the professional world;
  • Possibilities to participate in concerts and events with our professional partners, e.g. the Belgian National Orchestra and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra;
  • Minimum one fully staged original opera production with orchestra created by the IOA and its students;
  • Opportunities to participate in masterclasses, to audition for agents;
  • A study location in Ghent: a cultural hotspot, a historical city full of students and culture. Ghent provides easy access to important concerts and opera productions in major European cities. Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris and London are no more than a two-hour train ride away.
