In an operational environment with an involvement in more and more complex contract structures, with high expectations from DEME’s worldwide clients and with increasing regulatory restrictions from authorities, DEME today is able to offer its worldwide clientele a total solution through a variety of innovative international contract forms for complex dredging, offshore and marine engineering projects, in which contractual, financing and insurance techniques go hand in hand.

You will be part of the Legal Department, situated at DEME’s headquarters in Zwijndrecht (Belgium), which consists of an extensive and complementary team of in-house legal counsels, each responsible for one or more geographical areas in the world, DEME business units and/or specific professional domains. Within this department, you will join the sub-team dedicated to maritime and logistics contracts.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide legal support in respect of DEME’s maritime activities.
  • Analyse maritime and logistics contracts (e.g. Charter Parties, Terminal & Agency Agreements, etc.)
  • Draft maritime and logistics contracts and manage any disputes arising under these agreements.
  • Lead negotiations with stakeholders including Vessel Owners, Charterers, Terminal Operators etc.
  • Actively build and maintain expertise in the field of Maritime contracting.

Your profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Law.
  • You have a first experience as a lawyer or in-house counsel in the Maritime industry.
  • You are fluent in English both verbally and in writing. Other languages are an asset.
  • You are familiar with BIMCO contracts. Knowledge of other contract types such as FIDIC, NEC and LOGIC are a plus.
  • You have built up experience in a commercial / contracting environment whereby you have reviewed, advised on and negotiated complex tenders and contracts with multiple stakeholders involved.
  • You have experience in advising on contentious matters and disputes.
  • You are customer-oriented and searching for practical solutions.
  • You work autonomously and are a problem-solver by nature.
  • You have excellent communication and social skills.
  • You are flexible towards short notice travelling.
