To strengthen our Pharma Sciences Materials Science Department, based in Braine-l’Alleud (Belgium), we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of: Materials Science Lead

As Materials Science Lead, you like to work in an environment where you can:

• Create vision and roadmap for Materials Science to inform CMC development.
• Drive the development of new products at Drug Substance - Drug Product Interface.
• Enhance the connection between Molecules, Materials and Medicines across the entire lifecycle.
• Facilitate further QbD / Biopharm 4.0 implementation.
• Drive the change related to the new ways of working.

As Materials Science Lead, you will contribute by:

• Driving the understanding of the physical and surface properties of pharmaceutical powders (API and excipients) to feed into establishment of integrated drug substance-drug product Control Strategies and associated input materials specifications.
• Designing new approaches/methodologies to characterize materials (including miniaturization, modelling, …).
• Steering CMC development vision towards next level of Patient Centricity and leaner processing options (including direct compression).
• Delivering Materials risk assessment to support drug product strategy and life cycle management planning, including assessment of materials variability (API and excipients).
• Mentoring Scientists & SMEs during cross-functional interactions.
• Informing CAPEX/OPEX plans with Materials Science input in collaboration with Drug Product leadership team.
• Steering trouble shooting activities.
• Providing holistic view on primary/secondary processing options.
• Tailoring further QbD/CPV strategies from a Materials Science perspective.
• Acting as key opinion leader in UCB and/or externally in Materials Science that is regularly consulted to contribute to resolve complex technical problems and to influence emerging regulations and/or best practices.
• Contributing to publications, external presentations and leadership of industry wide working groups.

For this position, you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:

• PhD in Sciences related to powder materials with at least 10 years of experience or master degree with 15 years of experience.
• Solid understanding of Biopharmaceutics and DS-DP processing methods is an advantage.
• Proven oral and written communication skills in English and ability to clearly and concisely present and communicate assessments and its impact to various audiences.
• Soft skills: entrepreneurship, influencing skills, motivation, enthusiasm, reliability, collaborative mindset.
