The Role
Function description
As Shared Engineering Services Consultant Metals, you are responsible for delivering high-quality services, linked to the competence domain of metalic materials. These services consist of qualification, problem solving, co-engineering, research and development, giving advice and training. The strength of the team is based on specialized knowledge, its application to specific problems within Atlas Copco Airpower and a customer-oriented approach.
You are part of the Materials team, which consists of different experts in the domains of Metals, Coatings, Lubricants, Polymers & Composites, Air, Gas & Water. The Materials team belongs to the Shared Engineering Services Department of the Airtec division. This Department offers services for specific competences internally in the company, such as noise & vibrations, dynamics, computer aided engineering, intellectual property, test infrastructure, materials, ...
Tasks/responsibilities:
- To independently carry out material research, e.g. failure analysis (fractography, fatigue, defects,…), corrosion, malfunctions or problems, material & process qualification, research on metal parts, castings, welding quality, bearings, surface treatments, metallic coatings, material selection,... You will overview the complete material request from metallographic preparation to investigation and final reporting.
- To study the impact of water and gas (and contaminants) on metallic parts, such as corrosion, embrittlement,…
- To develop profound knowledge on metal parts, castings, corrosion, welding quality, bearings, surface treatments, material selection, effect of gas and water,... This involves continuous learning about the specifics of Atlas Copco machinery and translating this into relevant material properties or material process requirements
- To provide expertise and advice to internal clients on metals, corrosion, failure analysis, material selection, gas/water,...
- To actively manage customer satisfaction: clearly communicate about the results, give clear advice and manage the costs and planning of your service.
- To report the working procedure, results, conclusions and recommendations to the internal client (project engineering teams, quality engineers, purchasers,…), adapted to their expectations.
- To preserve knowledge through documentation of best practices.
- To identify opportunities for improvement or extension of our services.
- To build strong networks with all colleagues of the Materials Team, with our internal clients, and with external partners (research institutes, suppliers and universities).
- Based on your growth and personal preferences, R&D projects can be added to your responsibilities.

- You are Materials Engineer or Mechanical Engineer with a background on materials engineering, or equal in diploma or by experience.

Context factors
- Atlas Copco is a machine manufacturer with a broad focus on mechanical engineering
- You communicate mainly with project members/project leaders who are located on-site, situated at engineering, production, purchase, field follow-up,… Although many of these people have a solid technical background, you need to be able to communicate with non-metallurgists effectively.
- Initially, you will carry out tasks according to established procedures for known issues. Later on, you will apply an established or a new procedure for new problems.
- You perform the tasks autonomously in close cooperation with a young and dynamic team of colleagues.
- You report to the team leader of the Materials Lab.
- As shared engineering services, a broad and diverse audience will request for support simultaneously. Swift priority management in combination with your team coach is often needed.
- Within Atlas Copco there is a culture of open communication in between department and active search for new ideas for future compressor technology.
