Patent Attorney

Function

As a Patent Attorney a in Barco’s Patent Group you will help coordinate and drive Barco’s patenting strategy, manage the budget, expand the scope to pro-actively capture innovation in Barco’s Innovation and R&D teams, monitor the competitive landscape, and interface with our General Counsel’s office on litigation and prosecution matters. The scope of this job covers Barco globally and has direct reports on several continents.

Key responsibilities

• You help to capture innovation from our R&D teams
• You prepare input to office actions
• You draft patent applications
• You communicate with external patent firms in Belgium, the US and Canada, Taiwan, and elsewhere.
• Coaching inventors in the field of IP to increase awareness
• Review and refine a coherent IP strategy, together with the business units and Barco management and in accordance with the commercial objectives of Barco
• Continue to create an extensive patent portfolio
• Valorization of the IP portfolio, increase licensing opportunities
• Be involved in infringement cases
• Daily management of the IP portfolio
• Patent prosecution (drafting applications, office actions, etc.)
• New patent filings which focus on strengthening protection for current products and identifying strategies for new products, for the future direction of the business. Technologies and product applications that are not specifically in the company’s current plans for commercialization can also be closely considered, with the aim of widening the scope of protection for potential future technology applications.
• Engage with management (CTO, R&D) to understand business models and technology strategies and advice accordingly to achieve our business goals.
  

Qualifications

• You have at minimum a Master’s degree in engineering or science
• You have min. 5 years experience as a Patent Attorney
• You have experience with drafting patents, interacting with patent firms and patent professionals
• You are experienced with Corporate Innovation
• You are familiar with an industrial R&D context
• Having experience with / knowledge of the following domains is a nice to have:
• Experience with technology development in the fields of optics, display technology and visualization techniques in entertainment, enterprise and health-care settings
• You have good communication skills (oral and written, in English) and are able to communicate with different audiences (technical vs business staff, internal stakeholders vs external patent lawyers)
• You do your job with integrity
• You are a team player with a can-do attitude
