Develop your talents in our challenging and rewarding environment.To strengthen our Laboratory Department, based in Nivelles, Belgium, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of R&D Engineer Steel.About The RoleAs an R&D Engineer Steel, you will report to our R&D Director Laboratories and Innovation Protection and be part of the Lhoist Group Business Innovation Center. You will be responsible for the development of lab activities, with a focus on safety, people management, new lab equipment investment or lab equipment revamping, definition and execution of the lab protocols and consolidation of lab results.You will work closely with the Application Departments and with the Innovation Project Managers to ensure that the lab activities are well aligned on the priorities, and the results are delivered in due time and are quality driven.Context of the roleLhoist Group is a global leader in lime, dolime and minerals. With a turnover of over 3.4bn € and headquarters in Belgium, Lhoist is present in 25 countries with more than 160 facilities and terminals, and sales in more than 80 countries.The Business Innovation Center, based in Nivelles (Belgium), is a group of approximately 60 people with more than 10 nationalities and structured primarily by industrial application. It includes R&D teams & laboratories, applications teams as well as transversal supports such as intellectual property, product stewardship and business intelligence. The Business Innovation Center aims to be a true innovation partner and service provider to Regions (Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia) developing Lhoist as The Global Leader in lime and minerals.The Iron & Steel Lab deals with ironmaking and steelmaking processes, looking for optimizing the use of existing (do)lime-based solutions as well as developing new solutions to meet the customer needs, particularly in the context of the green transition and the circular economy.Your Role And Responsibilities
  • Define lab activities and develop lab capabilities and functionalities
    • Manage and develop a team of R&D technicians and graduate interns
    • Define and validate lab working instructions and standard operation procedures
    • Design research programs, define lab activities and planning accordingly, consolidate and present lab results in due time
    • Identify needs for new equipment and lead their implementation and commissioning
    • Develop and follow up collaborations with external laboratories
  • Contribute to innovation & scouting projects and provide advanced technical support to business operations
    • Identify and investigate new scouting opportunities to feed innovation pipeline
    • Defines deliverables, lab resources and planning in collaboration with the application teams
    • Supports pilot industrial application tests in line with project objectives
    • Supports Value in Use analyses
    • Performs prior art studies and actively contributes to the patenting process
    • Develop network and fosters cross-fertilization
  • Develop scientific and technical expertise
    • Develop solid knowledge of state-of-the-art literature
    • Performs process and technology monitoring
    • Contribute to writing publications and present at conferences or customer meeting/events
    • Develop and provide trainings
About You
  • Master in Chemistry, chemical/process engineering or material science, ideally PhD graduated, or having at least 3-5 years of experience in R&D
  • 3-5 years of experience in ironmaking and steelmaking processes is a prerequisite, including fundamental understanding (PhD is considered as an experience as well)
