The Janssen Clinical Innovation (JCI) department reports into Global Development (GD) and is dedicated to driving innovation into the clinical operating model to make clinical development faster and better for patients, investigators, Janssen, and the industry at large. JCI’s approach is to learn through doing: we design and conduct demonstration projects that generate knowledge about novel operational models and methods. Once proven valuable and feasible, we embed new operational approaches and technologies into Janssen R&D with the goals of improving patient and site experiences, expediting drug development, and reducing overall costs. Our success comes by way of our entrepreneurial culture and teamwork. The Team Leader will be accountable for overall operational Janssen Clinical Innovation department performance. This will include leadership of a diverse, high performing team of innovation project and portfolio leaders, and accountability for portfolio optimization and execution/delivery of innovation initiatives. The Team Leader will drive Janssen Clinical Innovation multi-year strategy development, establishment of annual goals & objectives, and will be accountable for progress against them. The individual will lead the prioritization of innovation initiatives and early development research in close collaboration with the Therapeutic Areas/Disease Area Strongholds and in alignment with Janssen / J&J overall strategy. This individual will serve as key partner to other functions in GD, particularly Global Clinical Development Operations, to ensure early collaboration, leading to seamless transfer of capabilities, methodologies, and technologies proven successful in demonstration projects. The Team Leader will establish processes to ensure connectivity across a wide range of stakeholders. The individual will also lead the development of external engagement and publication strategy to ensure external visibility and leveraging of Janssen’s thought leadership in operations innovation. The individual will ensure that Janssen Clinical Innovation stays abreast of current events related to advances in health technology and clinical research methodologies, and shares these insights broadly. This individual will ensure that team capabilities are optimized to support the diverse subject matter expertise required for operational innovation, technology projects, and early development research. JCI is recruiting for a Senior Director, Team Leader, Janssen Clinical Innovation. Location is flexible and inclusive of the following locations; Raritan, NJ, Titusville NJ, La Jolla SD, Beerse BEL or remote based locations proximal to the aforementioned locations. Principal Responsibilities: The Senior Director, Team Leader, Janssen Clinical Innovation will be responsible for People leadership and staff management: Attract, develop and retain top talent; foster team culture conducive to high performance. Oversee individual G&O setting in alignment with Janssen Clinical Innovation G&Os. Ensure that staff capabilities match expertise & skill requirements of priority innovation opportunities, and that workload is responsibly managed. Portfolio optimization/management: Oversees the chartering and roadmap development for innovation initiatives, in alignment with Janssen’s / J&J’s strategic framework. Lead the prioritization of projects according to 4 key criteria: fit within company strategic framework, applicability/generalizability across TAs/DASs, strength of potential business case, and projects’ ability to generate conclusive data on value and feasibility. Stage-gate and implementation leadership: Oversees that key stakeholder input and feedback is sought and incorporated early on into projects and initiatives; that implementation considerations, such as future functional home/business owner for a process/technology, are identified & early alignment is sought, and that Janssen Clinical Innovation supports the transition and scale-up of successful new processes and technologies. Department operations accountability: Lead the establishment of annual Janssen Clinical Innovation goals and objectives and frequently track progress against G&O’s. Ensure that project OOP and FTE needs are accurately represented during business planning and that budget and timeline variance is minimized. Internal stakeholder management: ensure close connectivity with other departments within RDO and with key stakeholders in TAs/DAS, R&D and commercial, and across sectors. Approve the overall RDO-I internal communications plan and lead coordination of internal engagement activities and events. Ensure insights and learnings are bridged across TAs. External stakeholder engagement: oversee development and execution of congress presentations and publication plan. Ensure participation in industry wide innovation initiatives. Additional responsibilities: Lead or support projects, meetings, presentations, etc. as directed by the VP, Head of Innovation.. Principal Relationships: This position reports to the VP, Head of Clinical Innovation within Research & Development Operations. RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS: The individual will manage a team of innovation project leaders. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/INTERFACES: Principal Relationships Inside the Company Interacts with the GD senior leadership for input into Janssen Clinical Innovation portfolio strategy and project updates. Periodic interactions with GD Controller to manage innovation portfolio and related budget. Will have contact with individual employees and all levels of management and peers within R&D and all GD functions and their support functions, such as IT, Quality, Legal, Privacy/HCC, and procurement. Will also interface with stakeholders in commercial, medical affairs/RWE, and in the other Johnson & Johnson sectors. Principal Relationships Outside the Company Key Industry Initiatives/working groups (e.g. TransCelerate, CTTI, MRCT, etc.) and with leadership/staff of peer pharmaceutical companies’ innovation departments. Will collaborate with key strategic partners, including technology companies, emerging clinical trial service suppliers/vendors, congress curators, academic research organizations, data research networks, payer-affiliated data research partners, and others. Qualifications A Master’s degree/Graduate degree in business or life sciences; A minimum of 15 or more years of total business experience, as well as a minimum of 10 years of experience in global clinical research either in a CRO, Pharma, or other clinical trial environment A track record in executing / overseeing complex projects with a multitude of stakeholders In-depth knowledge of trial design, regulatory, privacy, and HCC regulations Line management experience Outstanding communication skills, both verbally and in writing Ability to analyze complex problems and to create a long-term strategic plan to solve them Excellent organizational, project management and influential management skills, complemented by a “hands-on” operational and business planning orientation.
