Responsibilities

Within BASF Seed and Traits R&D, genome engineering refers to generation of genetically modified plants. The Plant Genome Engineering group in Trait Research combines state-of-the-art genetic engineering, genome editing, tissue culture and transformation expertise, as well as are highly experienced in workflow-based operational organization aimed at minimal cost and timelines while ensuring required quality. Plant Genome Engineering is embedded in a research department that focuses on trait discovery, engineering and evaluation. For the Plant Genome Engineering group in our R&D Innovation Center in Gent (Belgium) we are looking for a pragmatic, enthusiastic and inspiring Researcher.

What you can expect-

• In this role you will be part of the leadership of our Plant Genome Engineering group.
• Together with other scientists and experts in the area of plant genome engineering, you will propose state-of-the-art innovative plant genetic engineering, genome editing and tissue culture technology concepts in our most relevant crops.
• You will develop and implement research strategies within assigned research programs, with associated internal and external activities, including management of external collaborations.
• You will implement efficient workflows, ensuring optimal use of resources and cost efficiency.
• You will contribute to the development and execution of competitive research programs using state of the art know-how and technology.
• You will evaluate the needs & potential in the area of genetic engineering, genome editing and plant regeneration across assigned research programs.
• You will contribute to the strategic research portfolio development in support of the scientific leadership of Trait Research.
• You will proactively report on progress of assigned research programs, developments and new opportunities to Program Leaders, Group Leader and other relevant stakeholders.
• You will lead a functional team of technicians and researchers and will provide integrated synthesis of major conclusions of experimental approaches and future opportunities.
• You will represent the company in external seminars, publish scientific articles, play an active role in IP filing and build an internal and external network.
• You will organize learning activities in the field of plant genome engineering, lead others into proposing innovative workflow improvements and support the development of the innovative ability and competence of the group.
• You will act as a BASF internal consultant within the area of plant genome engineering.
• You will act as a role model with respect to ensuring compliance with the relevant company standards (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment, Biosafety, Stewardship,...).

QUALIFICATIONS

• You are an experienced scientist, with a PhD degree in Life Sciences (or equivalent through experience) and a minimum of 10 years of experience in plant genetic engineering and genome editing.
• You are experienced in proposing and leading research projects and activities and you drive results.
• You are experienced in designing and implementing novel plant genome engineering technology concepts that enable industrial utilization. Experience in tissue culture is preferred.
• You are able to build a culture of innovation- creating an environment that supports creativity and coaching, training and developing people to spark innovation.
• You are digitally savvy.
• You motivate others and act as a leader beyond allocated responsibility.
• You act with entrepreneurial drive, overcoming obstacles and driving change.
• You have cross-functional work experience and are able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary environments.
• You have strong networking skills and are able to interact and cooperate with stakeholders on different levels in an organization.
• You have excellent communication and presentation skills, incl. public speaking.
• You are familiar with information technology and its use to support business objectives and processes.
• Additionally, you are fluent in English, both orally as well as in writing.
