Internship Proposal – Circular Economy & Sustainable Packaging

Company: Mazda Motor Logistics Europe

Location: Willebroek, Belgium

Duration: 5–6 months

Topic: Exploring Circular Economy Strategies for Packaging Impact Reduction and Polymer Substitution (including compliance with EU Regulation 2025/40)

Description:

Mazda Motor Logistics Europe is committed to advancing sustainability within its logistics and supply chain operations. Packaging represents a key lever for reducing environmental impact, and adopting circular economy principles is an essential part of our roadmap. This internship will contribute to both strategic and technical dimensions.

Key Objectives & Tasks:

  • Assess the environmental footprint of existing packaging solutions (life-cycle perspective).
  • Analyze and map opportunities for reuse, re-employment, and take-back systems for our packaging.
  • Investigate polymer substitution and material alternatives, from a chemistry and materials engineering standpoint.
  • Evaluate materials in view of durability, recyclability, performance, cost, and supply chain feasibility.
  • Ensure alignment and compliance with EU Regulation 2025/40 (and related packaging / circular economy legislation) — studying implications, deadlines, and obligations.
  • Benchmark best practices and innovations in the automotive, logistics, and packaging sectors (Europe, globally).
  • Deliver actionable recommendations and an implementation roadmap consistent with Mazda’s sustainability goals and legal requirements.

Profile & Requirements:

  • Enrolled (or recently enrolled) in a Master’s / advanced Bachelor programme in Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Solid understanding of polymer chemistry, materials science, and packaging technologies.
  • Familiarity (or willingness to study) regulations and standards in packaging and circular economy context (e.g. EU Regulation 2025/40).
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good command of English (written & spoken).
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently but also as part of a cross-functional team.

Deliverables & Expected Outcomes:

  • A detailed report analyzing the environmental impact of current packaging and reuse potential.
  • A comparative study of candidate polymer/material alternatives (technical, economic, and regulatory comparison).
  • An assessment of compliance strategy and road map regarding EU Reg. 2025/40 and associated requirements.
  • Strategic recommendations and an implementation plan for Mazda Motor Logistics Europe.
  • (Optional) A presentation to senior stakeholders.
