The Director, Bacterial Infectious Disease Discovery is a leading scientific subject matter expert in defining and implementing a program for infectious disease discovery based on innovative approaches and targets. Key Responsibilities: Lead project teams on the identification, characterization and validation of host or pathogen drug targets and subsequent pharmacological intervention with small molecules or other modalities aimed at curing patients with bacterial infections Lead project teams in cross-disciplinary collaborations to advance novel approaches and targets for bacterial infections Prioritize portfolio projects by establishing and executing on robust in vitro assay cascades and in vivo pharmacodynamic models that differentiate potential drug candidates Oversee the design and optimal execution of decisional experiments Advance projects with ID Biomarkers and ID Early Development teams to facilitate innovative discovery and to support development project progress in clinical phases Accountability for anti-bacterial projects with respect to delivery of NMEs through the effective direction of project teams comprised of Biology, Chemistry, JBIO- Biologics, PDM, Safety and Biomarker colleagues from the global Janssen R&D organization Complement internal research efforts with external efforts; identify scientists to help with Innovation Center assessments and prioritization of external opportunities to ensure their success Develop and contribute strategy for the ID Discovery research team, build and maintain infrastructure and resources to support delivery of clinical candidates and transitioning them into early development Employ a global mindset for an efficient discovery model that leverages and optimally synergizes with the other research sites. Identify skills and knowledge gaps and based on resources needs, hire appropriate personnel and develop (or access) core technologies and emerging science to support innovative drug discovery. Communicate program strategies and key milestones to peers and senior leaders Implement a culture of compliance with safety procedures, healthcare compliance, company training, and local and country regulations across teams Promote global ID discovery interactions across geographies and functions Represent research to key opinion leaders, investigators, and collaborators to develop rapport and foster collaboration to maximize opportunities Participate in a matrixed ID cross-functional and cross-program research forum to influence Janssen’s ID research strategy and portfolio Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or M.D. degree and greater than 12+ business experience with a background in Microbiology or antibacterial drug discovery, or 3-5 years of experience performing progressively advanced duties at the Sr. Principal Scientist/Associate Scientific Director level, or the equivalent training/experience is required Demonstrated expertise managing discovery projects and managing a group across functions Experience managing drug discovery teams focused on small molecules and/or other modalities is preferred Experience managing in a matrixed/cross-functional organization is preferred Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence leadership and strategy across functions; high-quality oral presenter and motivational speaker experience are required A strong publication record is required This position is located in Beerse, Belgium and may require approximately 10% travel.
