Job Purpose and Impact

The Oil Seed and Lipid Research Scientist will use their expertise in fats and oils and their interactions with other components in food systems for the development of novel ingredients across multiple Cargill businesses. In this role you will be part of the Global Core R&D team accountable for technical leadership in lipid and oil seed projects including experimental planning and execution, intellectual property development, and external sourcing of research.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and execute research plans in lipids and oils by utilizing knowledge of oil storage in seeds, separation of the various components in oil seeds and modifications of oils and fats for new product concepts and processes aligned with business objectives.
  • Translate ideas and concepts into experimental set-ups and conduct experiments following environmental health and safety guidelines in a high-safety-focused environment.
  • Identify new research areas by monitoring scientific and patent literature and by engaging with internal and external partners including knowledge institutes, universities and technology vendors.
  • Present ongoing work and findings to both R&D and business leadership and to external audiences including conferences, academia, and customers
  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Food or Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Oils and Fats, Lipids or equivalent experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and managers.
  • Confirmed working knowledge of scientific research principles, concepts, practices and standards.
  • Minimum of four years of work experience in oils and fats industry
  • Fluent in English
Preferred Qualifications
  • MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Food or Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Oils and Fats, Lipids or Oil Seeds
  • Demonstrated track record in applying expertise in oils and fats chemistry and physical chemistry (enzymatic, chemical modifications, separation, oxidation) for novel ingredient development
  • Deep understanding of fats and oils and their interactions with other ingredients in food systems
  • Experience with project management and experimental design
  • Able to build partnerships and works collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
  • Knows the most effective and efficient processes to get things done, with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Makes sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.
