The Centre for Processing of Speech and Images (PSI) of the department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) of KU Leuven is at the forefront of computational science and deep learning in speech and image processing. It currently employs 58 PhD students and 10 postdocs.

Project

Children develop their reading skills mainly in primaryschools. This is an intensive process that requires many hours of the teacher’stime. Some children evolve faster than others, calling for a personalizedapproach in a setting with limited educational resources. Also, non-nativelearners face different challenges and require more time. In this PhD project,you will work on solutions based on deep learning to accurately provide feedback to learners,estimate their level of proficiency and stimulate reading.

This project is a collaboration between prof. Hugo Van hamme(Processing of Speech and Images research unit) of the Faculty of EngineeringScience who will act as the promoter of the PhD project and prof. Ghesquière(Parenting and Special Education research unit) of the Faculty of Psychologyand Educational Sciences, who will act as co-promoter. Your primary work placewill be the department of Electrical Engineering.


In this 4-year PhD project you will repurpose modernautomatic speech recognition technology to analyze the read speech, identifyreading mistakes and find ways to provide feedback to the pupil. You will alsoform diagnostic metrics for characterizing the reading strategy and performanceof the pupil.


You will also lead the data collection campaign in primaryschools.

Profile

  • A Master degree in artificial intelligence, electricalengineering or computer science.
  • Background in machine/deep learning.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Willingness to work inan interdisciplinary context.
  • An inquisitive and creative mind, good problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Dutch at a conversational level.
