- You will conduct a comparative study oftranslation policies in several Belgian cities in the 19th century, based onlegal and administrative documents that you will collect from the archives ofpublic institutions.
- You will use digital tools to apply qualitative contentanalysis and corpus analysis methods.
- You will work in parallel with anotherPhD student, who will be employed at the Transius Centre (Department ofTranslation, Faculty of translation and interpretation, University of Geneva) towork on the Swiss part of the project (funded by the Swiss National ScienceFoundation – SNSF).
- You will complete a PhD thesis, write academicarticles and present your research at conferences. You will contribute to thework of the research team and the activities of the Research Group, includingdeveloping a documentary database for the project and organizing scholarlymeetings.
- You will work under the supervision of Prof. Reine Meylaerts (KU Leuven), in collaboration with the project partner Prof. Valérie Dullion (University of Geneva). The thesis will be awarded jointlyby both institutions with a cotutelle agreement.
- You have a master’s degree or equivalent in translation or in a related field (e.g.linguistics, history, literature, digital humanities, law, political science),with some knowledge of translation/translation studies and a focus that isrelevant to the themes or methods of the project.
- You have the ability to work in French, Dutchand English. The thesis may be written in French or English, depending on yourpreference.
- Your academic record (e.g. the quality of yourmaster’s thesis)demonstrates your aptitude and interest in research work.
- You have good oraland written communication skills.
- You are able to work both in a team andindependently.
- You are willing to spend a year at University of Geneva (a research stay is planned during thefellowship).
- You are proficient with standard IT tools.
- The position is open at a rate of 100% for amaximum period of four years. It is remunerated in accordance with the salaryrange for doctoral students in FWO-Vlaanderen-funded projects.
- You will carry out your PhD as part of aninternational research project, facilitating your integration into the academiccommunity.
- You will complete your theoretical and methodological training atthe doctoral schools of the two partner institutions (CETRA at KU Leuven and ReMeTISat the University of Geneva), both members of the International Doctorate inTranslation Studies network.
- You will benefit from the welcome, informationand support services provided by the Doctoral School for the Humanities andSocial Sciences of KU Leuven.
