Vias institute is a knowledge centre that focuses on sustainable behavioural change in order to reduce social risks. We have been doing this for more than 30 years in the framework of road safety, but over the last years, our focus has been extended to the domains of mobility, safety, and health care. Vias institute is involved in research, advises, develops innovative applications, and provides training. We work for citizens, policy makers, governments, and companies, both nationally and internationally. As an employee at Vias, you work together with 130 colleagues in order to achieve our goal of a safer society.

For our team, we are currently looking for a researcher social sciences.

Your responsibilities

Depending on your expertise, experience, and interests, together we consider which projects suit you best. Depending on the workload and scope of the projects, you will work on an average of two to three projects simultaneously. The following activities are part of a researcher’s job description:

  • You follow up on the available knowledge and literature on a certain topic within the domains of traffic safety, mobility, or social safety.
  • You help determine appropriate methodologies for new projects.
  • You collect, analyse and synthesise research data. You convert then these project results into structured notes and reports.
  • You use these notes and reports as a basis for validating policy advice and recommendations.
  • You will present the research results in various forums, for example to clients or at conferences.

Your profile

  • You have a master’s degree in social sciences (sociology, political science, criminology, psychology, and so on) and are keen to explore topics such as mobility, traffic safety or social security.
  • You have strong analytical skills. Knowledge of a programming language or statistical software is an asset.
  • For our projects, we often work together with authorities in Belgium and the European Commission. To ensure efficient communication with the partner, our researchers have a very good knowledge of French or Dutch. A good knowledge of the second national language is a bonus, as is a good knowledge of English.

Our offer

  • We offer you a full-time contract for an indefinite period of time. You will receive a competitive salary and meal vouchers (7 euros a day), ecocheques (250 euros a year), hospitalization insurance, group insurance hospitalisatieverzekering, een groepsverzekering and a reimbursement of public transport.
  • We also work on road safety by teleworking structurally (2 days a week for a fulltime).
  • Within the knowledge centre, you will join a team of +/- 35 researchers with a very diverse background (psychologists, sociologists, mobility researchers, economists, engineers, criminologists, geographers, and so on). Within the team, there is always room for humour, spontaneity and fun initiatives such as a Secret Santa or a Mud Run.
  • When carrying out the projects, we aim for good supervision and teamwork, but also a high degree of independence. We focus on innovation and encourage taking initiative.
