Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Function

Problem Context

The workcell of the future envisions a collaborative environment where humans and machines work together seamlessly to improve productivity, accuracy, and flexibility. A key component of this vision is a digital assistant that supports operators in performing complex assembly tasks. This assistant leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to provide natural, intuitive interactions and real-time guidance. Combined with technologies such as cobots (collaborative robots), projection systems, and vision-based state tracking, the digital assistant adapts dynamically to the operator’s needs and task progress.

Goal

The Goal Of This Internship Or Thesis Is To Design And Experimentally Validate One Or More Aspects Of Such a Digital Assistant Within a Real-world Setup. Students Can Tailor Their Contributions Based On Their Own Expertise And Interests, Exploring Areas Like

  • Teaching the digital assistant assembly knowledge in an intuitive and scalable way.
  • Deploying a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system that leverages manuals and work instructions to answer operator queries in real time.
  • Integrating vision-based state tracking to enable dynamic, context-aware support for operators.
  • Enhancing natural language interaction capabilities powered by LLMs to improve usability and adaptability.

The work will be carried out in Flanders Make Leuven, using a fully equipped test environment with cobot and projection system to validate the developed methods. A video of current implementation can be found here: https://youtu.be/5HE6ZN1cWl4?si=XnwkKxojvAs3PRwc
