Corporate Environmental Director

We at Yara are part of a global network, collaborating to profitably and responsibly solve some of the world’s key challenges - resource scarcity, food insecurity and environmental change.

About the Unit

The Corporate HESQ team develops governance and common standards and exchanges information for the HESQ area. HESQ also monitors, advises and assists all Yara’s units to ensure that the activities are carried out in conformity with statutory regulations and the HESQ requirements laid down in the Steering System. The HESQ governance covers occupational health and safety, process safety, environment, security, emergency preparedness, product stewardship and chemical compliance.


The HESQ environmental team establishes Yara’s environmental governance standards, assesses our environmental impact and risk, and follows up and reports of our environmental performance to internal and external stakeholders.


We are currently looking for a Corporate Environmental Director who will be accountable for developing and integrating corporate environmental policies and governance, risk and performance to Yara’s business processes. They will lead the global Corporate HESQ environmental expert team thus enabling Yara’s roadmap towards the ambition of Nature Positive Food Future. They will be the highest global Yara expert in the environmental discipline and in related policies, stakeholder expectations and compliance obligations.

Responsibilities

Their key responsibilities and areas of accountability will be to


  • oversee long and short term environmental impacts and risks and their financial consequences relevant for Yara’s business and operations, including climate and nature risks and opportunities, environmental liabilities and compliance risks
  • prepare and present these for the review of Global Executive Board and the Board Audit and Sustainability Committee and to inform Yara’s Capital Value Projects and other strategic and business development decisions on environment-related impacts and risks
  • develop and implement company-wide environmental policies, governance processes and tools based on best practises from the perspectives of Yara’s ambition, corporate commitments and stakeholders expectations
  • embed environmental considerations to corporate core business processes, such as strategy, risk, business planning and performance review, in collaboration with respective corporate functions
  • monitor stakeholder expectations and development of regulatory and other compliance obligations related to environmental topics. Initiate timely actions and corporate resourcing to respond to the expectations.
  • define Yara’s material environmental topics, set and align related strategies, goals and KPIs throughout the value chain
  • monitor and assess Yara’s environmental performance globally and through the value chain
  • communicate Yara’s environmental goals, commitments and requirements, performance, compliance and risk to relevant internal and external stakeholders in order to ascertain timely awareness and to initiate necessary actionsm including Yara’s Integrated and Sustainability reporting
  • advice Yara regional business management, other corporate functions, the global Yara HESQ community, business units and business management with environmental expertise to facilitate fact-based and environmentally-conscious business decisions

In addition to broad and comprehensive environmental expertise, the task requires a collaborative, ambitious, accountable and curious way of working


  • to enable Yara’s compliant and sustainable transformation towards Climate Neutrality and Nature Positive
  • to work across business units, functions and interest groups to create common understanding and make fact-based decisions considering environmental and nature impacts
  • to align with internal and external needs, roles and strategies of other functions and units
  • to lead Yara in adapating to stricter and more complex environmental regulatory frameworks
  • to actively share knowledge with relevant functions and organizations in Yara

Profile

  • University degree on environmental science or engineering with broad expertise in environmental management and policies.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in international corporate environmental governance and management, preferably in the chemicals or food / agri sector. Demonstrated experience in successfully leading multi-national environmental teams and regulatory processes in global industrial operations with production, global supply chains and diverse product use and customer portfolio.
  • Strong conceptual and structural knowledge of environmental governance frameworks and processes, including compliance and risk management
  • Ability to work across top management and senior-level leaders to influence business decisions and processes.
  • Demonstrated excellent teamwork, leadership, communication, influencing and change management skills.Proactive and self-motivated. Capable to work independently.
  • Ability to effectively work with a diverse global workforce.
  • Ability to travel as required in support of position responsibilities.
