Mm-wave radar imaging towards cm-scale 3D resolution
What you will do
IMEC has a substantial and growing program on millimeter-wave radar sensors covering a broad range of application domains such as automotive, security, professional and home/consumer. Our activities include the complete implementation in a CMOS System-on-a-Chip (SoC) of the millimeter-wave front-end, ADC and high-speed digital signal processing. Our designs exploit frequency bands such as 60, 79 and 140GHz where large bandwidths allow to approach the cm-scale range resolution. The angular resolution of a radar depends on the antenna size and it is typically harder to achieve cm-scale cross-range resolution, even at mm-wave. One approach to increase the angular resolution is the MIMO radar principle that can produce relatively large virtual arrays with a modest number of physical antennas. Another one is to exploit the synthetic aperture radar concept originally devised for airborne or satellite-borne systems. A third one is to exploit sparsity and the compressive sensing framework to reduce the physical antenna count. We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher with significant experience in MIMO and SAR radar architecture and processing to join our millimeter-wave radar team.
The job will consist in developing large imaging SAR/MIMO radar architectures based on several IMEC mm-wave radar chips. The radars will target both low and high mobility scenarios such as automotive and robotics. You will have to find suitable concepts and algorithms to achieve 3D imaging with a Lidar-like angular resolution, which is beyond state of the art. You will also have to deal with ambiguities especially in the Doppler and angular dimensions. Based on your deep understanding and knowledge of imaging radars, you are expected to bring innovations at all levels, including architecture, signals processing and implementation (algorithmic trade-offs).

Who you are
  • You have a PhD degree in electrical engineering, with a strong background in radar architectures, signal processing and super-resolution algorithms.
  • You are very familiar with beamforming, MIMO radar and SAR radar processing, imaging radar processing.
  • Experience with compressive sensing is a plus.
  • You are proficient in Matlab and Python. C/C++ plus.
  • You have excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • You can easily integrate in a multidisciplinary team within global context.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
