What you will do

System Architecture innovations are key to position imec for success in fast evolving workloads of tomorrow and to differentiate imec’s process technology innovations with system level value proposition. The Compute System Architecture Unit at imec leads research into futuristic compute system to extend imec’s semiconductor research leadership deep into the next decade. This unit is researching new CPU and accelerator capabilities for next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI), compute-in-memory architectures and heterogeneous memory systems. The unit is responsible for architecture definition of new data-centric compute, novel memory subsystem and accelerator capabilities, analyzing emerging usage models, and building hardware and software prototypes for data-driven computing hardware capable of exa-scale performance.

As we expand our research to optimize computing systems, we are looking for a Research Engineer for hardware emulation of the proposed system. The role provides flexible opportunity to work on next-generation SoC for exa-scale system platform, including RISC-V cores, mixed-signal/digital accelerator blocks, emerging memory sub-systems. He or she will work closely with a team of micro-architects, partners, to customize infrastructure that influences future technology definitions.

In this role you will:

• Develop an understanding of computing technologies needed for applications such as Machine Learning, Quantum Computing.
• Explore dedicated ML and AI hardware to benchmark them against state-of-the-art solutions.
• Develop understanding on RISC-V CPU architectures for exa-scale computing systems.
• Teaming up with various experts within imec, you will prototype hardware implementations and demonstrators built around imec’s in-memory AI technology, either in FPGA emulation or ASIC based test platforms.
• Keep yourself updated on recent developments in the field, by studying literature and interacting with your colleagues.

Who you are

• MS or PhD degree in computer or electrical engineering with relevant experience in hardware prototyping (FPGA/ASIC), design and/or verification.
• You are comfortable in digital design and SoC architecture - RTL, Clocks, Resets, Interconnects, Memory Controller, IO technologies, Multimedia accelerator pipelines, CPU/GPU coherency, Platform integration.
• You have knowledge of CPU architecture / microarchitecture, workload characterization and system performance
• You have the ambition to drive future technology, proposing innovative ideas and are willing to work to their circuit and system-level validation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• You thrive in an open collaborative working culture that provides an opportunity to impact products and roadmaps with your ideas/prototypes/empirical analysis.
• You work in a structured, transparent, and accurate way.
• You are a constructive team player and actively share experience and knowledge with colleagues.
