The VIB Metabolomics Core Facility Leuven (MCL) is part of the VIB Life Sciences Institute and is located at the Gasthuisberg campus of the University of Leuven, which ranks among the world’s top 50 universities. At the Metabolomics Core Leuven, we implement and develop state-of-the-art mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies for the study of a broad set of biological disease models (from cancer to neurodegeneration, inflammation, etc). For this, MCL has a versatile machine park at its availability enabling the study of in vitro and in vivo disease models (‘classical’ MS and imaging MS).MCL is currently looking for a scientist (junior postdoc) to help interpret complex data and assist clients in the diverse aspects of metabolomics analyses. As well, the candidate should also be able to supervise/carry out the de-risking of novel technologies on in vitro and in vivo models.Job DescriptionAs a scientist, you will report directly to the head of the Mass Spectrometry Center (Prof B Ghesquiere) and you will help coordinate the setup of the metabolomics pipelines and protocols that meet the different needs of the researchers. When successful, you will eventually enroll as a VIB Technology Expert leading a subteam of researchers (technical and scientific staff) developing novel methodologies (focus on technology) that could lead to scientific breakthroughs. You ensure the follow-up of ongoing projects and you will develop and implement novel methods into the analysis pipeline to improve existing methods where possible. You will take the lead in some of the high-risk high-gain projects and critically assess the impact and feasibility.Profile
  • you hold a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Medical Sciences or you have gained equivalent expertise through seniority
  • you have built up provable expertise in metabolomics and tracer metabolomics applications
  • you can perform in stressful situations and make rational decisions when needed
  • you have excellent communication and leadership skills
  • you are customer-oriented and you can explain complex matters in layman’s terms
  • hands-on experience with LC/GC-MS systems from different vendors is considered an asset
  • hands-on experience with different software platforms (processing of raw files to an understandable format) is considered an asset
We offer
  • dynamic and challenging research environment with important clinical and translational impact
  • access to unique mass spectrometers, training in the available technologies, as well as supervision of scientific staff (leadership courses)
  • a broad professional network (academic, clinical and industrial), national and international
  • Availability: as soon as possible
How to apply?Interested candidates should submit their candidacy through the VIB online application tool.A complete application file (English) should contain the following documents:
