USP-DSP Scientist

To lead its increasing number of development and manufacturing projects in Plasmid DNA, Catalent Cell and Gene Therapy is looking for a highly motivated USP-DSP Scientist.

The Role

Scientist’s responsibilities need to be adapted according to the development phase of the project, from early process development to technical transfer to GMP production. The main tasks and responsibilities relate to plasmid DNA purification process development.

The candidate is expected to:

• Define, develop, optimize and validate fermentation processes for microbial products in shake flasks and bioreactors, as well as DNA purification processes, using chromatography and filtration techniques.
• Scale-up processes from laboratory to production scale.
• Actively participate in process transfer from R&D to GMP production.
• Deliver USP-DSP processes and process flowcharts in a timely manner.
• Identify and implement new technologies and solutions for plasmid DNA purification process development.
• Perform experiments and routine lab analysis following established protocols, autonomously.
• Maintain accurate and complete records according to company policies.
• Anticipate potential problems and perform troubleshooting analysis and experiments.

Specific tasks:

• Setting up bioreactors and/or shake-flasks. Monitoring / controlling fermentation processes, harvesting culture, and maintaining the fermentation system and its supporting equipment.
• Set up and run bacterial lysis, chromatography and filtration processes. Monitor/control processes and maintain DSP equipment.
• Processing samples for yield assessment (midiprep, agarose gels).
• Designing and performing experiments to evaluate strategies to improve product yield and quality in small scale and pilot scale.
• Prepare tech transfer documents and manage tech transfer activities from process development to GMP production.
• A successful candidate also needs to communicate effectively with co-workers and partners on a daily basis.

The Candidate

• Master of Science, Bio-engineer or PhD in Biology, chemistry or equivalent, through education and/or experience.
• Previous experience, knowledge and hands-on experience on the principles, practices and techniques of fermentation, chromatography and/or filtration (DNA highly desirable).
• Experience working in a GMP environment is a plus.
• High degree of personal accountability, being able to work and handle multiple assignments independently with broad guidance from leadership and deliver results within project specific timelines.
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret scientific articles and technical procedures.
• Ability to communicate and present data to the team.
• Ability to transmit passion and enthusiasm.
• Multitasking and resistant to stress generated by project deadlines.
• Computer skills: Office package. Experience with data management and statistics software is a plus.
• The candidate must be fluent in either French or English. Fluent in both languages is a plus.
