EBCD is an international environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) with the main objective to promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural renewable resources both in Europe and worldwide. It supports science based solutions, full stakeholder participation, due consideration for the socio-economic aspects and for cultural diversity.
EBCD is looking for an intern to contribute to the work of EBCD regarding fisheries and marine conservation, both at the EU and international level. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to improve their analytical and public affairs skills, deepen their understanding of EU and international policy processes and learn about EBCD and its activities.
Objective
The candidate will acquire experience in EU fishery policy and international environmental politics, improving their skills in communications, public affairs, policy monitoring, policy research and project management. They will also acquire knowledge of recent developments in fisheries regulations, international ocean governance, global biodiversity & climate policy, food security and sustainability.
Nature of the Internship
Under the supervision of the International Affairs Advisor, the intern will work on project(s) relevant to their professional interests, scholarship programs and development needs. Interns may be given a wide variety of tasks related to various aspects of:
- policy monitoring & reporting
- policy research
- fisheries management
- fisheries science
- climate & biodiversity policy.
Period of internship
The internship will run for a period up to a maximum of 3 (three) months and will be based in Brussels, with the option of teleworking in line with Belgium’s COVID-19 measures.
Qualifications of candidates
Applicants must have:
- a very good spoken and written command of the English language, while knowledge of other EU language(s) is considered an asset
- computer literacy
- demonstrated personal initiative, critical thinking and willingness to learn.
Required skills and education
- Being in the last year of a bachelor’s or Master’s degree on political/social sciences, international relations, law, environmental conservation, biology or other relevant fields
- Knowledge of or strong interest in one of the following: international fisheries policy, ocean governance, law of the sea, international environmental politics, climate and bio-diplomacy
- Good communication skills and willingness to improve their expertise in public affairs and policy monitoring
- A general understanding of the EU and/or UN policy processes
- A critical eye on or previous exposure to EU or international environmental politics is a strong asset.
Remuneration
The candidate must possess funding or a scholarship that will cover their expenses over the course of the internship. Transport costs are covered by EBCD.
