Contract: full time, permanent

Janssen PMP, a division of Janssen Pharmaceutica (Johnson & Johnson family of companies) is a long-established world leader in the development and commercialization of new and highly effective active substances and end-use products for the protection of materials and surfaces and of fresh produce. With more than 50 years’ experience in Material Preservation and Plant Protection, Janssen PMP has developed strong technical and commercial expertise.

To support its current business in material protection, Janssen PMP has the ambition to expand its know-how and testing capabilities in paints and coatings, especially in the Antifouling area, with the aim to develop innovations around its current portfolio. The focus will be on Janssen PMP’s ground-breaking ECONEA® biofouling control technology which is used in various market segments, including Marine, Yacht and Aquaculture.

The Formulation Scientist Antifouling Coatings will act as the Janssen PMP technical expert for Antifouling paints and coatings in innovation research, new product development and technical customer support. In this function the Formulation Scientist Antifouling Coatings will work closely together with the Janssen PMP R&D team, the Antifouling Sales and product management team and the BU leader.

The main activities of the Formulation Scientist Antifouling Coatings are the following:

  • Provides technical support to the Janssen PMP Antifouling team but also to third parties such as research centers and customers. Interacts internally with the Antifouling Product Manager, Sales Managers and technical experts.
  • Increases PMP knowledge on Marine Antifouling and Aquaculture paints and coatings by:
    • Expanding capabilities and know-how to formulate and evaluate solvent and water based Antifouling coatings
    • Continuously developing prototype test coatings in which innovations can be tested and evaluated
    • Optimizing in-house capabilities for release/leach rate testing of active substances from submersed coatings
    • Taking the technical lead in innovation projects and proof-of-principles (POP’s) around anti-fouling products.
  • Further builds-up lab capabilities to be able to in-house formulate and evaluate test coatings.
  • Interacts with customers and other third parties to increase knowledge on customer needs and discuss the new technical and business opportunities.
  • Monitors current scientific literature in key journals. Performs general patents, literature and research searches including analysis and interpretation. Attends seminars, local and regional scientific meetings in associated fields.
  • Establishes network to formulate and evaluate test coatings externally.
  • Fosters strong technical relationships with all stakeholders and the customers
  • The Formulation Scientist Antifouling Coatings will also be part of project teams and will act as Core Team Member according to the Johnson & Johnson Flawless Project Execution (FPX) guidelines.

Qualifications: Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master in chemistry or chemical engineering or bachelor with relevant experience
  • Experience in formulation chemistry, paints and coatings industry, analytical leach rate testing as well as knowledge of anti-fouling products is an asset
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of particle and/or coatings characterization techniques is preferred
  • Willingness to work in the lab and to be in frontline contact with customers, test institutes and co-formulant suppliers
  • Comfortable with designing own experiments, interpreting results, proposing next steps and writing reports.
  • Flexible, eager to learn and develop
  • Good English communication skills (written and spoken)

Preferentially 80-100% working on the Beerse campus
