Job Summary

The mandate of the Safety, Compliance, Training and Development Service is to provide training and development, safety and compliance, and quality and continuous improvement of bus, para transit and light rail services. Services and programs include appropriate safety and job training for transit employees, and the compliance, development and implementation of safety standards to protect the general public.

You are responsible for designing, preparing, administering and delivering all training for safe operation and control of the light rail network and good service for customers including control and oversight for all light rail vehicle movements, enforcement of Operating Rules, adherence to safety critical procedures including track access, implementation of authorizations and safe work zones, electrical isolations, and monitoring of other safety and security systems including tunnel ventilation, fire, access control, and building management. You also monitor trainee performance, records trainee progress throughout the training period, and designs customized scenarios to enhance performance.

Education And Experience

Two year community college diploma in a technical, electrical or computer program or related field

3 years experience as a certified rail controller and experience in one or more of the following areas: Electric rail regulations, Transportation control, Dispatching Incident/emergency management; and demonstrated experience in a high-volume and high-demand operational environment and using computer and communications technology.

Diesel Rail Instructors must have at least 2 of the 3 years’ experience as a Light Rail Operator

Supervisory experience is an asset

  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction. Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
