Job title

Laboratory Operations Manager, reporting to Head of Geotechnical Laboratories based in Wallingford.

The role

As the Laboratory Operations Manager you will take responsibility for the overall operations of the geotechnical laboratory ensuring all testing, and related activities, are performed as efficiently as possible, ensuring deadlines are met and consistent with relevant processes and procedures. You will be working closely with the Laboratory Operations Manager in Belgium to ensure output is consistent across both sites. As well as supervising the daily laboratory activities you will ensure your team are trained and mentored and performing to their optimum. In addition to this you will ensure the laboratory maintains UKAS accreditation whilst championing stringent QHSSE and technical requirement and standards.

Who you’ll be working with:

Reporting to the Head of Geotechnical Laboratories you will work closely with the Marine Testing Manager, Quality Manager, Lead Programme Manager and Data Manager.

Here’s what a typical day would be like:

  • Manage the overall operations of the geotechnical laboratory.

  • Ensure all testing, and related activities, are performed as efficiently as possible, meeting strict deadlines that are consistent with relevant processes and procedures.

  • Maintain the highest levels of safety and testing standards in accordance with company procedures and QHSSE policies.

  • Ensure the laboratory staff work as an integrated, high functioning team.

  • Training, mentoring and coaching staff to ensure all test methods are performed in a safe and reliable manner and to support and facilitate continual career development

  • Continuous communication and liaison internally to ensure timely submission of deliverables and client satisfaction.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • In-depth knowledge and experience of operations management.

  • Experience of managing and motivating a team.

  • Excellent communication skills as well as being a champion for diversity.

  • Able to effectively prioritise a workload based on internal and external requirements.

Desirable

  • Theoretical and or practical knowledge of soils testing, understanding of offshore marine geotechnical projects.
