The Centre for Academic Teacher training belongs to the Faculty of Theology and Religious Sciences. In addition to forming religious education teachers and managing the Thomas website for religious education, the Centre for Academic Teacher Training performs high-level research into Catholic school identity in Flanders, Australia, the USA and other places in the world. Particularly in Australia, we run a number of large-scale research projects under the common denominator: Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI). Within the ECSI research team, headed by Prof. Dr. Didier Pollefeyt and research co-ordinator Drs. Jan Bouwens, you assume responsibility for performing research, creating graphs, and writing English research reports for Catholic schools in Australia, in addition to general project work.

Responsibilities
  • Becoming acquainted with the ECSI research by means of self-study (scientific literature and online modules) and verbal explanations.
  • Assisting the research team with the yearly acquisition of new research data via our extensive survey website.
  • Assisting the research team with the calculation of research results and the mass-production of tables and graphs that visualise those results. Adding those tables and graphs to report templates.
  • Reading and interpreting the research results. Reflecting and discussing the information with colleagues. Assisting the research team with writing multiple English academic research reports for Catholic primary and secondary schools in various states in Australia.
  • On top of the survey research, performing qualitative research in schools: document portfolio analysis, religious history of schools, annotated photo report analysis, and online interviews with school leaders. Reporting the findings in a written report.
  • Taking care of communication with various target groups (via email, telephone and sometimes also video conference) and maintaining networks with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assisting the research team with the preparation and execution of annual ECSI Intensive Courses that we organise in Leuven for groups of Australian school leaders and educators.
  • Keeping various (electronic) files up-to-date and assuming responsibilty for efficient classification and information management.
  • Assisting the research team with project related tasks of different nature, such as (but not limited to): inputting data, reviewing English texts, contributing to scientific articles, the creation of new survey instruments, general administrative tasks, logistical support for the organisation of congresses or study days, and other related tasks.
Profile
  • You have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Catholic theology and/or in a related field in the human sciences.
  • Having a background in educational theory, field experience in education, and a keen interest in the philosophical and religious identity of schools, are a surplus value.
  • You have a perfect mastery of the English language, both verbally and in writing. A good knowledge of the Dutch language is a surplus value. This means that you are either a native English speaker who lives in the area of Leuven, or a Dutch speaking person with exceptional abilities in the English language, for example because you lived in an English speaking country for several years.
  • You possess good IT knowledge and skills (in particular the MS Office suite, and Adobe Photoshop). (No specific statistical knowledge or skills are presupposed.)
  • You have an interdisciplinary, creative and innovative mindset. You are eager to embrace new ideas and invent original solutions. You are pro-active and take spontaneous initiative. You can set priorities within the agreed timelines. Your attitude is oriented towards solving problems and obtaining results in an efficient way.
  • You have an intercultural attitude and are used to operating in an international environment.
  • You can work independently as well as together in a team context in a smooth and loyal way.
  • You are flexible and willing to work overtime, evening work or work from home if necessary.
  • You are discreet and can handle confidential information.
Offer
We offer you employment in an innovative and internationally oriented research environment that will provide ample opportunities to further develop your talents and skills. We offer a contract of 60% (three days per week), 80% (four days per week) or 100% (full-time) for one year, with the possibility of renewal after positive evaluation.
