Project description
COMPAS (‘COMPact modeling of high-tech systems for health management and optimization Along the Supply chain’) is a national research project (https://itea4.org/project/compas.html) endorsed with an ITEA label. Due to its ITEA label, 3 countries (BE, NL, GE) can collaborate in such framework. Ten industrial partners (SISW, Siemens AG, NXP, Infineon Technologies AG, Easy Innovation, Micro Consult Engineering, Lightyear, Reden and MSC Software) work together with Fraunhofer and four universities, i.e. KU LEUVEN, Jade university, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven.
Within this project Siemens Industry Software (SISW) will aim together with KU LEUVEN (non-) linear model order reduction for high-fidelity thermo-mechanical models of power electronics (inverter, autonomous perception sensors) and test validationof (vendor-neutral) ROMs as physical digital twins (DT) for design or in-operation purpose. Research challenges are here: i) reducing the 3D high-fidelity dynamical thermo-mechanical models into compact models, ii) designing the right digital twin test & validation methodologies and workflow, iii) efficient co-design along the supply chain, iv) speeding up design and optimization process with a factor 1000x faster, v) optimizing the global design-cycle modelling effort with an model-based testing approach using thermo-mechanical DT.

Job description

Within the COMPAS project, SISW has an open position for a Research Engineer in smart vehicle testing and simulation technologies with a specific focus on thermo-mechanical behavior and analysis of power electronics used in electric vehicles and autonomous vehicle sensors at Siemens Industry Software. This researcher will cooperate with the other RTD team members and project partners to execute the activities in this project.
The candidate will use his/her measurement, analysis, test and modelling experience on specific vehicle and sensor power electronics. He/she will execute four main tasks: i) compact thermo-mechanical model creation, verification and validation of a module of a driving assistance sensor in a real testing environment to be able to enhance the safety sensor and vehicle performance, ii) optimization of realistic high-fidelity and compact converter models to be able to run in real-time and updated with measurements for continuous monitoring of the control and detection of ageing phenomena , iii) investigate the usage of vendor-neutral standards for co-simulation and integration of the (non-linear) thermo-mechanical models in a full-vehicle or system environment, iv) demonstrate SISW results in the proposed ITEA demonstrator.
The candidate will interact with the project partners and with peers within the RTD team to plan and execute the ongoing research activities. The candidate will contribute to reporting of project results towards the funding agencies as well as internal reporting for dissemination of project results to project engineers and ensure alignment with business objectives.

Candidate profile

The candidate will be working as research engineer in the research team of the Test division in Leuven.
A suitable candidate:
  • Has a MSc. in Engineering (Mechatronic, Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical).
  • Is fluent in spoken and written English in view of collaboration, presentation and reporting.
  • Has experience with programming languages such as Python, C, C++
  • Has experience with power electronic design, modelling and analysis
  • Has experience in control and joint simulation-testing engineering.
  • Has experience with automotive and aerospace applications.
  • Has a creative and critical mindset towards technical problems.
  • Is motivated to work in a result-oriented way and can work independently within the team.
Competences that are considered as an additional asset/advantage:
  • Adequate proficiency in spoken and written Dutch considering communication with national funding agencies (VLAIO).
  • Previous experience with Simcenter tools (Testlab, SCADAS, 3D, T3STER, SCAPTOR, Flotherm XT, FLOEFD, Amesim, etc)
  • Ph.D. in a relevant area of expertise.

Practicalities

  • In a first stage, the candidate will be hosted at SISW (Leuven, Belgium) with a temporally contract of 12 months, preferably in the timeframe September 2021– August 2022. Good results and mindset allow a translation in a fixed contract.
  • Apply through the Siemens Job Portal
