Within the parameters of the Underwriting Management Team and in close collaboration of the Country Manager, the role holder is responsible for ensuring that all underwriting processes are embedded, optimized and monitored.
Key Areas Include
Contribute to the Strategy of the business unit locally together with the local Management team
- Challenge and approve the loss ratio performance including the class strategies and align with the SBU as a whole.
- Lead the challenge of underwriting performance through the class review process and meetings
- Keep the Country Manager and Executive Underwriting Manager informed of any key underwriting developments and issues and gain approval for actions to be implemented
- Effectively manage and implement change, to ensure the Business Unit is able to deliver goals in competitive and ever-changing markets
- Ensure timely co-ordination, input and production of the annual Business Plan
- Monitor progress versus the Business Plan, taking any appropriate corrective actions
- Via meetings & control reports, ensure and monitor that the Amlin Policies, Procedures and Standards are implemented and adhered to
- Work with the Quality Assurance team so that underwriting & administration teams are operating in accordance with relevant policies and standards, including data quality.
- In collaboration with PMI and other sources, provide sufficient reports to support control over the business
- Compose and ensure that relevant management meeting packs are provided in a timely manner
- Responsible for the appropriate production of forecasting and reporting processes – accurately representing and analysing data
- Ensure a consistent and rigorous challenge to actuaries on both a gross and net basis
- Ensure accurate quarterly result forecasts, as well as a correct insight into how these results are realized.
- Guide the DFA process
- Manage Class Reviews and ensure timely follow-up of Actions and issues
- Ensure collaboration with the actuarial team support pricing activities enabling a consistent underwriting and pricing methodology across the relevant lines of business
- Provide input to managers in support that authorities reflect UW abilities
- Responsible for overall quality and timeliness of the Risk Review process and quarterly reports
- Ensure “lessons learned” are shared amongst the appropriate staff
- Input and guidance into the RDS processes on a timely basis ensuring consistent and accurate data is used and cascaded limits are adhered to
- Ensure no overexposure of risks and that the local operation remains within the agreed parameters, reviewing and taking corrective actions where appropriate
- Review plans and RI programme, adding value to the internalisation of RI
- Ensure that regulatory requirements are embedded into the Business Plan
- Ensure continuous implementation of Compliance and Risk Management with relevant Group policy, risk, regulatory and legal requirements, reporting any issues as appropriate.
- Coordinate Internal Audits and Expert Reviews, ensuring action points are carried out and embedded within time limits
- Together with local management, ensure high levels of engagement, training, motivation and retention of our talent and key performers
- Engagement in relevant teams and boards, to provide insight into growing the business from an underwriting management perspective.
- Work with Claims and Finance to ensure an overall view of the local P&L
- Act as a central “go to” point for problem solving
- Co-ordinate with the Group Binder Management team to deliver an effective and timely support to underwriters
- Responsible for the provision of local wordings support, ensuring it is consistent, efficient and commercially astute
- Manage the Expense Management and Control process
Take on cross country responsibility for specific areas of work within the Underwriting Management team. Each area should be clearly defined so that the overall process is transparent for all. All roles should be clearly set out in order that expectations can be met. The cross country responsibilities are set out in order to ensure an aligned approach across the offices in P&C Europe. The responsibility should also include follow up and reporting on progress and status in each country. Any issues shall be taken up firstly with the local UM but should also be reported regularly to the EUM and at the UM Forum.
