The KU LEUVEN Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) is a research unit of the Faculty of Law. The Centre is affiliated to imec (research group on security & privacy) and a member the Leuven Centre on ICT (LICT), Leuven.AI, ISI-Health, Centre for Health Humanities, LISCO, and DigiSoc. CiTiP has over thirty years of experience in conducting research into the legal and ethical aspects of innovative technologies in both the public and private sectors. The Centre currently consists of over 80 researchers involved in interdisciplinary projects funded by programs such as Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Marie Curie, FWO and ICON as well as through bilateral contracts. Responsibilities

The ongoing digitization and increasing automation transform society and human practices in many and diverging ways. These transformations challenge existing legal and regulatory frameworks and require appropriate governance. The selected research fellow will work on research projects related to such transformations in a variety of domains, such as healthcare and critical infrastructures.


The research position involves the following tasks:

  • Conducting fundamental and applied legal research, often in cooperation with computer and data scientists;
  • Acting as a point of contact for and engaging with CiTiP’s partners in research programmes;
  • Publishing research in high quality peer-reviewed national and international journals; presenting research results at national and international meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Generating and pursuing original research ideas (for new research projects and/or a doctoral dissertation);
  • Engaging in science communication towards non-legal experts, stakeholders, the public at large (e.g. through CiTiP’s blog);
  • Building research collaborations nationally and internationally; facilitating and participating in crosscutting research collaborations as appropriate;
  • Contributing to the overall activities of the Centre (taking on limited educational and teaching assignments, contributing to grant applications, participating in thematic team meetings, setting up internal workshops).

Profile

Candidates drawing our attention will hold a master’s degree in law while having a demonstrable interest for the societal impacts of technological developments. They will be proficient in English. Good command of Dutch will be considered as an additional asset.
