Company
The Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (“BIO”) is a development finance institution controlled by the Belgian government that seeks to support the private sector in developing countries by investing in local enterprises, either directly or indirectly (e.g. through financial institutions or investment funds).
Function
As an Investment Officer, you will be responsible for developing and executing new investment opportunities (equity and loans) in financial institutions across the developing markets in which BIO operates and in line with BIO´s investment criteria.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Establish and manage a base of clients, through a deep understanding of the target countries, relationship building and active prospection.
- Identify and evaluate investment opportunities that are in line with the Company’s strategy, using economic, financial, social and environmental parameters.
- Leading the investment through the entire investment cycle, including pre-approvals, conducting on-site evaluation missions, preparing management and investment committee reports, negotiating terms of investment and legal documentation.
- Supervise the development of the portfolio of investments in the region.
- Promote and reinforce the role of BIO in the region, constantly improving relationships with local players, potential partners and other stakeholders.
- Active participation in relevant investment/networking conferences (often as a speaker or panellist).
- Excellent quality of investment assessments, structuring of notes, strategic and analytical reviews up to highest standards.
- Developing internal skills and capabilities in the team, building and sharing knowledge on key areas of interest for the FI team.
- Coaching and supervision of other IOs in the execution of deals and provision of feedback, including FI IOs, Portfolio IOs and Generalist IOs.
- Supervision of equity transactions as PIO or Board Member.
- Lead and/or actively involved in internal or transversal topics with concrete objectives and achievements.
- Responsible for pipeline generation for the team and Generalist IOs.
Profile
- High level education in Business Administration, Economics or Finance
- Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in corporate finance or corporate banking, in a bank, an investment company or an audit company
- Analytical mind, organised, precise and meticulous, results-oriented
- Ability to take initiative, learn quickly and not afraid of challenges
- Excellent networking, negotiating and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Strong team player
- Fluency in English and French is a must, Spanish and/or Portuguese is an asset
- Strong interest in impact investing and developing markets – international investment experience in the region would be an asset
- Willingness to travel: ± 15% of the time
