Nature & Scope

Within the R&D unit of the technical department in the Hydrogen Business Line, you contribute to the development of innovative solutions in line with the product and technology roadmaps. More specifically, this position focuses on the design and development of next generation electrolysis stack based on ion exchange membranes.

Main duties

  • You are accountable for the development and design of cell stacks using novel ion exchange membranes. This encompasses among others
  • the definition of the stack architecture and geometry of the various components,
  • the basic and detailed calculations (possibly supported by computer simulation) of critical parts and quantities
  • the design of the bipolar plates
  • the design of the clamping system
  • the selection of appropriate materials
  • the collaboration with component manufacturers to improve the manufacturability and reliability of the stack
  • In collaboration with your colleague from the R&D and engineering teams, you
  • incorporate the results of lab tests and computer simulations into the design of the cell stack
  • exchange relevant information for the development of the balance of stack
  • take part to the definition of test protocols to evaluate performance, lifetime, and robustness of the cell stack
  • support the protection of intellectual property
  • assist with funding proposal
  • You perform Root Cause Analysis/Failure Mode Analysis to identify, quantify and mitigate risks

Profile

  • MSc/PhD in electrochemistry, material sciences or mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of electrochemical cell stacks for electrolysers/fuel cells/flow batteries either in a research center or in the industry
  • Know-how in hydrogen systems
  • Excellent verbal and written command of English and French
  • Working knowledge of Dutch or German is a bonus

Skills

  • Analytical, agile, team player, and autonomous
  • problem-solver, and hands-on, ‘big picture’ thinker
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with failure mode analysis
  • Proficiency with CAD tools
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
  • Knowledge of calculation tools (MATLAB, Octave) is an asset
