Context
UCLouvain is a comprehensive university offering, in the context of the present position, the opportunity of cross-disciplinary research and teaching collaborations. Within the Social Sciences and Humanities Sector, the position is attached to the Faculty of Economic, Social and Political Sciences and Communication and to the Institute for the Analysis of Change in Contemporary and Historical Societies that offer opportunities for diverse and stimulating teaching as well as an environment to carry out ambitious research. The Mons site offers a unique living environment, focused on pedagogic innovation, centered on the student and is situated in a green and technologically smart setting.
Mission
Teaching
The candidate will be attached to the Mons site and more particularly to the Teacher Education School. He or she will teach mainly in the field of interculturality in interaction situations, both in the Teacher Education School and in the Schools of Communication and Political and Social Sciences, but also possibly at the Louvain School of Management and at the Education and training school (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences). Teachings related to soft skills (interactions, communication, etc.) will also be entrusted to him or her.
The teaching units under the responsibility of the incumbent would notably comprise: Group and conflict management in classroom situations, Teaching and interculturality, Intercultural communication, Interpersonal skills, Interculturality and public services.
The candidate will demonstrate the necessary pedagogical skills to teach in staggered masters courses for adults returning to university, in addition to teaching younger students enrolled in daytime bachelor and master courses in the programmes offered by the Faculty mainly at the Mons site.
Research
The candidate will develop his or her research activities in interculturality in an educational context from a social science perspective, and more particularly from anthropology.
Without being exhaustive, his or her research could concern, in order of priority, the intercultural dynamics of interactions in school situations, inclusive schools, the integration of cultural diversity in education systems, the comparison of education systems from an intercultural perspective, etc.
The candidate will be attached to the Institute for the Analysis of Change in Contemporary and Historical Societies. He or she will join a research group dealing with education and interculturality (Interdisciplinary Research Group in Socialisation, Education and Training, Laboratory for a prospective Anthropology). He or she will also be able to collaborate with the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Cultures and the Arts in Movement (Institute for Language and Communication) which develops research in the cultural field, particularly on the Mons site, and to participate more globally in the research dynamics carried out on the site.
Function
- Be responsible for teaching courses at all study levels (i.e. undergraduate and postgraduate), as well as in programmes of continuing education;
- Supervise the final diploma research (i.e. theses) of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as PhD theses;
- Be involved in (and/or supervise, promote) research programmes;
- Be available to carry out, in the long term, different service activities and take on responsibilities within the University and its entities;
- Contribute to the international visibility of the University through teaching and research excellence;
- Contribute to activities of the University with a societal impact in the fields of the economy, socio-cultural changes or cooperation with developing countries.
Required Qualifications : the applicant must have
- A PhD degree in Social sciences or Education sciences or any comparable discipline;
- Either studied abroad for an extensive period or have had substantial experience outside his or her university of origin;
- A significant scientific record with international publications;
- Experience in and the aptitude for teaching at university level, demonstrated if possible by formal assessments;
- The capacity to work within a team of teachers and to integrate research findings into teaching;
- Creativity and must be open to teaching innovation and interdisciplinarity;
- The capacities required to undertake high-level academic research: capacity to raise research funds, to supervise projects, to animate and lead a research team;
- Team management and communication skills, including if possible fluency in English spoken and written. Otherwise, the applicant will be asked to acquire it within two years after taking office, in order to be able to communicate and teach in this language.
- A good knowledge of the Belgian educational system would be a considerable asset.
- The candidate will have to demonstrate an interest in initial and lifelong teacher training.
- An anchor in the field of anthropology and ethnography would be a considerable asset.
- The candidate must be perfectly operational in two languages including French. Knowledge of other languages is an additional asset.
