JOB PURPOSE

Packaging Design manager is responsible for the leadership of the packaging design team at the Amcor Innovation Center Europe, owning the design strategy for entire group based on consumer/retailer/customer requirements.

Scope & Geographical spread: Amcor Flexibles Europe, Middle East and Africa, Cross Business Units

Reporting Function: Research & Development

Internal Relations: Sales, Marketing, Research & Development

External Relations: Customers, Suppliers

Location: Amcor Innovation Center Europe in Gent Belgium

Training program expected at Innovation Center North America


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Leads Technical / Design Team at Innovation Center
  • Guides pragmatic package designs from well-known formats to new platforms based on customer need
  • Specialist in R&D / Material Science / Packaging Technology
  • Works with Marketing to connect problems via insights to real world packaging solutions.
  • Proactively engages Business and local R&D to identify design needs based on market segment or customer specific insights
  • Actively participates in and leads customer events from Workshops to virtual presentations along with marketing/sales
  • Leads technology scouting in terms of packaging formats with Original Equipment Manufacturers
  • Works beyond Flexible Packaging to other BUs (eg Rigid Packaging) when appropriate
  • Investigate new customer requests and work with team members to develop and propose strategy to provide new packaging solutions to meet those needs if existing products do not match the requirements
  • Develop or support the creation of capital expense and project budgets for assigned area(s) of technology
  • Develop and protect intellectual property in partnership with Intellectual Property team

  • Manage several projects at the same time
  • Challenging lead times
  • Manage prioritization shifts
  • Lack of clear guidelines on customer needs, but be able to define strategies

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS


  • Formal Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelors/Masters degree required with an emphasis on technology/engineering. Additional education relevant for the Packaging Design role preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in a similar R&D/Designer/Creative role .
  • 3+ years experience in building and managing a progressively capable team.
  • Previous success in enhancing customer relationships
  • Experience in material science with success in developing new customer-focused products
  • Advanced computer skills to include MS Office, Minitab, etc.
  • Preferred: Flexible Packaging or similar industry experience
  • Ability to travel up to 30%
  • Fluent English, Dutch speaking preferred
