About The Fellowship

This Venture Fellowship has been created to honor Dr. Agbandje-McKenna and her passion for science and innovation, with the goal of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the venture community. On March 3, 2021, Mavis Agbandje-McKenna passed away from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Mavis was a highly accomplished scientist, and she also enjoyed mentoring students and sharing her love of science. Mavis was born in Nigeria and moved to the United Kingdom where she pursued education as a way to a better life. Mavis obtained her PhD in Biophysics from the University of London, and then she studied ssDNA viruses at Purdue University and the University of Warwick before joining the faculty at the University of Florida. Mavis co-founded the biotech company StrideBio. She has been recognized numerous times for her scientific contributions. These include being the 2018 University of Florida Innovator of the Year as well as earning the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy in 2020.

Duration: Up to 12 months

Time commitment:Full time

Location:London, Brussels, or US East Coast (Boston, New York)

Start Date: Flexible: Early/Late Summer 2022

Profile And Qualifications

• Technical scientific background: Advanced degree in life sciences required (PhD, PharmD and/or MD)
• A first experience in a business setting beneficial (e.g. Biotech start-up, Pharma, Strategy Consulting, TTO)
• Self-starter, ability to identify creative solutions independently
• Strong analytical skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, highly proficient written and oral communication skills
• Fast learner with ability to get up to speed in technical areas outside core expertise
• Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
  

Responsibilities

• Evaluate investment opportunities
• Present at internal weekly triage/deal flow meeting and act as contributor to investment decisions
• Strategic analysis of investment opportunity
• Deep dive into specific fields of interest for future investments
• Support due diligence on potential new investments as part of the core investment team
• Identify potential key academic and industry leaders in fields of interest
• Support on fund’s operational needs
